August 25, 2020 at 5:32 pmA great thread from Thomas Grove Carter over on the electric twitter machine. Here are some excerpts:

Audio cross fades shortcut!Very simple. Works exactly how it should. Overlapping, user defined, fade handles added to selected clips. Fine adjustments can be made to length and shape after. Obvs. If audio is collapsed they remain hidden. If expanded, you see them pop in. pic.twitter.com/zyT5GuBYoW

Much better support for other frame-sizes- Square and vertical presents- Duplicate Project As let’s you change sequence settings before it’s duplicates- Smart Conform uses machine learning to reframe shots- Smart Conform can also be triggered in the ‘Duplicate As’ screen pic.twitter.com/cc0DIsEtFb

For me, Smart Conform is a really good starting point when making an alternate frame-size version. It’s results can then be tweaked or changed in the with Transform tools. Pro tip.Doesn’t just work for Square/Vertical. Also works if you want to switch to 2.35 for example!

Transform Overscan shows you parts of your shot outside of the frame when scaling and adjusting. pic.twitter.com/7DeUsFytnR

More ProRes RAW controlsISO, color temperature, and exposure. Feels similar to the kind of stuff you can do with RED RAW

And frame.io is on the spot with their update too!
Looks like @Frame_io has updated their #Fcpx Workflow Extension. You can drag clips from the extension directly into Final Cut Pro, and it will download them in the background. https://t.co/2o4P1JcwSk

As frame says on their website,
In practice, this means we’re able to saturate all of your available bandwidth and make the very most of your internet connection. With Frame.io Transfer, you now have a robust way to move terabytes of data reliably. You could pay hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars a month for this acceleration technology in other products, but we believe that moving files quickly is table stakes, so we’ve made this feature available to everyone.
Also new to Frame.io Transfer are login-free downloads. If you’re working with vendors who need to download large batches of files from Frame.io (full-resolution visual effects plates, for example), you can now send them Review links, and they will have the option to download all files using Frame.io Transfer, no account or log-in required.
Nice!
There’s a bit more to Thomas’s thread if you care to explore, including some movie clips that I was too lazy embed here, but you get the idea. 🙂

August 25, 2020 at 5:53 pmRipple Training put out a very detailed tutorial on all the new features.
I have to say I don’t find any of it useful for my own purposes (except audio crossfades) but I can see how all the proxy improvements would be useful to many.

August 27, 2020 at 12:33 amAnyone else have issues with MXF files? I have a Sony FX9 test clip that will no longer import into FCPX. The supplemental ProApps codec pack has been installed.
I’m beginning to wonder if some of this requires Catalina. Mojave is technically OK, however, now I have two formats that are no longer visible, even though codecs have been installed. However, the FCPX menu still says Download Additional Content. When I click it only the Catalina installer shows up.

If you are a mac user and especially of you use it to edit footage from a Sony camera I recommend that you do not upgrade the operating system to OSX 10.15.6, Pro Video Codecs to 2.1.2 or upgrade FCP-X to version 10.4.9 at this time.At the moment there is clearly an issue with footage from the FX9 after these updates. It is not clear whether this is due to the new Pro Video Codecs package 2.1.2 that is comes as part of the update to OSX 10.15.6 or whether it is just related to the FCP-X 10.4.9 update. Some users are reporting that some FX9 MXF files can not be previewed in Finder after updating as well as not being visible in FCP-X.
While so far it I have only seen reports that footage from the FX9 is affected, but it wouldn’t surprise me if Venice material is also affected.
I would suggest waiting for a few weeks after the release of any update before updating and never do an update half way through an important project.
I have a Sony PXW-X70, but didn’t update FCP X yet. Catalina is at 10.15.6. I am between video projects and was about to do the update.

August 27, 2020 at 12:56 pmI have no issues with .mxf files from the Sony FS5 after the update so hopefully it’s just the FX9

August 27, 2020 at 1:01 pmI don’t have FX9 footage, but footage from F55 (XAVC 300) MXF files work.
As do Sony Venice (XAVC Intra 300).

August 27, 2020 at 5:40 pmYes, this is normal for the update. However, FX9 footage doesn’t appear to work – or at least it may be intermittent based on clips or camera.

August 27, 2020 at 10:10 pmOliver,
Here you go. From another forum.
“For those of us who edit with FCPX it doesn’t look like Apple have any plans to resolve the issue with the 10.4.9 update and .MXF files from the FX9
Here’s my response from Ryan a senior FCPX support tech:
Hi there,
Engineering did confirm the camera is indeed unsupported. And is not expected to work correctly regardless of success in the past. One can backup a working computer with an older version of FCP using time machine
then go into utilities (command + U in the finder) and open the migration assistant to restore the machine to that disk image. (Dont forget to backup your own computer as well first). In regards to timeline with engineering
Its not actually an Apple related bug. We have a set of set standards for things to be compatible with OSX/ FCP/ Quicktime and our pro codec formats as our OS and software is open source, manufacturers and developers
work with our engineering to get products in spec. Our engineering team is recommending to contact SONY for support in this instance. My recommendation would be to transcode the footage into a .mov using the SONY
software until SONY can possible come out with a plugin (similar to what RED did) that enables the FCP workflow with this unsupported camera. I totally get the frustration on this one. I’m so so sorry this is happening.”Warren Eig
