Well, not sure how they did that particular example…,
but try a “gel” or a “lightmap”.

Assign your Texture to the Materials Transparency-Channel,
and drag that Material on to your Spot-Light.

You might have to render to see the result.

Well, I am not sure if this is the best book ever written about Cinema 4D R10,
but I would highly recommend Cinema 4D 10 Workshop by Arndt von Koenigsmarck,
very well written and suitable for new and experienced users alike.

The included CD not only has all scenes and data to complete the tutorials,
but also the highly recommended plugin “Photo Match LE”, which permits you to easily insert 3D objects into photos.

One can of course change Intensity and Noise for a different look.

Try this:
Create a Sphere and make it editable and go into Points-Mode /
from the Structure-Menu select the Magnet-Tool /
in the Attributes-Manager maybe change Mode to “Dome” or “Bell” and the Radius maybe to “150m” /
in the Toolbar uncheck X and Z and move the top point of the Sphere upwards /
maybe experiment with the other settings as well /
maybe drag the Sphere into a HyperNURBS for even more smoothness.

In the timeline try control+shift drag the keyframes to another object.
(functions should be transfered as well)

The receiving object might have to have at least one keyframe beforehand.
