I converted some .avi files to ProRes 422 with MPEG Streamclip. They work fine in FCP. One weird detail: if I load a clip into the viewer, it shows up as a white screen UNTIL I play it. It plays normally. But then, if I pause, it goes back to a white screen. Any idea why this might be?

    Mark,

can i talk to you on the phone about this if that’s ok with you? I’m applying for a grant due April 15 for the additional equipment I need to an Interrotron. I can request up to 4k, so if I get it, I”d have the funds to do this right, but I feel discussing this thoroughly will go much quicker over phone.

Is the difference that big between the two? Ideally, on the cheap. I’m thinking ahead to a project I’ll be starting in about 11 months where I’ll be on the road for a while so portability would be something of an issue.

That said, you get what you pay for in life.

    Jim,

I’m having the same problem with AVCHD footage. Did you ever get anywhere? I wonder if this is more common than I realize or if I’m doing something really dumb…

    Grayson,

Did you ever get this fixed? I’m having this exact same problem, having shot on the same size and speed. Except, it seems to apply to all my clips.

  • This sounds like a dumb question, but where is the “name preset” capability? I’ve looked online for this and in FCP but can’t find it.

    And, yeah, it’s FCP 7

I had my terminology wrong. I have the transport controls, but I am missing the jogger and scrubber. I have everything else that should be here but that. And, as I said, the J-K-L controls don’t work.

How do I trash my preferences for this?

Thanks for the note. That said, is there a way i can easily assign clips to different bins while logging them? I don’t think so – I tried figuring this out earlier today – but I since I am going to put them in separate bins anyway, I wonder if there is a way to do it while transfering them?

  • is this to say there is no way to make a smaller file that won’t have these problems? i’ll need some sort of workaround in the way you described?

  • I’ve been using this method but have been having problems because I’m losing the time code.

I need to make smaller versions of my captures files so I can send them via DVD or Dropbox to the translator on my project. I’ve been using different things to export QT files to a smaller size – MPEGStreamclip, QT 7, QT Amateur – but each time I lose the time code as you mentioned Shane.

Is there a way around this? How can I make much smaller QT files without losing time code?
