You can use audio timecode and/or a slate. But like all prosumer camcorders, the DVX doesn’t have a TC in/out.

It would be quite tricky. The only way to preserve full image quality would be to windowbox the 4:3- that is keep the same height of the frame but add black bars on the sides to fill the 16:9 framesize. Squashing the 4:3 to fill a 16:9 frame will lose resolution and quality- especially coming from a DV source like this.
I’d advise again this as it could detract from the piece as a whole visually. It’s always a good idea to settle on format before a shoot begins rather than switch mid-project.

Not yet- I’ve just received all of the material for our next kid video and am scheduled to go over it with the director next week. Look forward to trying the new beta!

Throwing out a little plug- I’ve had excellent results with DVX100 footage using Graeme’s G-Nicer plugin to upsample the 4:1:1 chroma info. Results are amazing with the FCP built in keyer.

Also another trick I use is zebra. Crank the f-stop open as you are lighting the screen. You’ll see zebra whereever something is unevenly bright on the screen. Keep working on the light until there’s no hot spots. Then try to get as little spill as possible onto the actors by lighting them seperately.

That and very careful lighting are what will make an easy key.

The HVX does indeed shoot 24p in 1080 in the same method used by the VariCam to achieve 24p in 720 and the DVX100A to achieve 24p in 480. It should be available in the NTSC version well before the end of 2005. PAL version is a different story- I would expect it to shoot 25p not 24 and would most likely ship later than the NTSC.

That is correct- there is no intelligence inside the P2 chip to allow it to directly see an HD. It must be connected via a computer, a P2 store or the camera itself to dump contents.
