Sure you could Firewire DVCPROHD out to a 1200A but there’s something a bit off about running a $6,000 camera to a $25,000 deck. Better off just renting a VariCam.

It’s not the image quality so much as the efficiency. You can create a 24 frame web video that’s 20% smaller than a 29.97 web video with the standard 3:2 pulldown included. Similar setup with the 24p DVD. Also a 24p DVD will play in native 24p on a progressive scan DVD player hooked up to a compatible plasma monitor or DLP projector. If you wanted to edit 24p standard at 23.98 it would require more effort in post to convert from 24p standard.
As an aside I think you can easily find a b-stock or used SDX at a pretty close price point to the Sony and you’ll be making a huge bump up in quality going from 4:1:1 25Mbit DVCAM to 4:2:2 50Mbit DVCPRO50.

There is no recording to the heads. In DVCPROHD and DVCPRO50 you can _only_ record to P2 or to hard drive with an HVX200. As P2 cards are very expensive and of limited capacity the hard drive becomes a more realistic option for long and inexpensive recording times. Hard drive recording quality is identical to P2. The HVX does not record to tape in the HiDef and DVCPRO50 modes because it would have created a more expensive tape unit that would not have fit into a prosumer shell. That is reserved for the VariCam.

Yes- this has been mentioned/confirmed quite a bit. In HD it’s also the only alternative to P2 recording. There is no DVCPRO50 or DVCPROHD to tape on the HVX200.

I’d still say shoot in 24pA. You can make higher quality DVDs and web video in 24p native and easily create a DV tape output with automatic pulldown insertion.

Only in terms of workflow. Clip by clip pulldown removal takes much more effort than automatic. I’d highly advise getting the 1394 option for the deck if this is more than a few hours of footage.
