For several months I’ve been shooting interviews for a doc using a DVX-100 with its native 4×3.
Now we will start piecing together produced b-roll and other elements with more cinematic considerations. I’m now considering switching over to the the XL-2 for the rest of the shooting to utilize its native 16X9.

Will I have an trouble mixing these two in editing?
In otherwards, slicing down the 4X3 interviews to match the other 16×9 for DVD and European releases. And, of course, doing just the opposite(cutting down the 16X9) for the US television version.

It would be quite tricky. The only way to preserve full image quality would be to windowbox the 4:3- that is keep the same height of the frame but add black bars on the sides to fill the 16:9 framesize. Squashing the 4:3 to fill a 16:9 frame will lose resolution and quality- especially coming from a DV source like this.

I’d advise again this as it could detract from the piece as a whole visually. It’s always a good idea to settle on format before a shoot begins rather than switch mid-project.
