I wouldn’t point at them for more than a few seconds at a time. It’s not like burning out your eyes but over time you can damage the camera depending on the proximity and intensity of the light sources.

  • I’ve found Motion/FCP integration to be a bit too unpredictable in terms of altered or filtered clips. It’s more time-consuming to export the timeline but the results are guaranteed so that’s what I do.

  • What do you mean? I’ve never seen such an icon in the viewer. Where did you purchase Motion?

I’ve shot greenscreen with both Beta and the DVX100 and found the DVX to be superior as to the keys I could pull. Bottom line of course is lighting. Get that right and it’s a piece of cake, blow it even slightly and your post will take forever.

The upcoming HVX200 prosumer camera will be the first Panasonic camera to shoot 1080i/p as well as 720p p in 24p and 60i(and many other frame rates in between). There’s other Panasonic 1080i/60i cameras such as the AJ-HDX400. I think we can expect further cameras to evolve from the HVX200 to fill the gap up to the Varicam.

It’s impossible to estimate specific layer performance because different effects tax the card more. For example a simple text layer is always going to play fast, but a very complex particle will often play slow. You’ll learn quickly how to optimize previewing as you use Motion.

If you can afford it- get the 2.7, the X850 and 4+GB of RAM. Graphics card is most important followed by ram and processor.

In simple terms no. Think about carefully though. How much would it cost to hire an assistant to sync the dailies? Maybe $300-500 for the week it might take. Surely if you are renting a DAT you can afford that.

Perhaps with the $65K or so you are saving on a VariCam, a $21K deck is not a bad deal?
