Do the clips have many effects/transitions added? Are you playing from a slow hard drive? How many streams in which resolution/codec? All of these factors will affect playback perf.

If you mean can you disable connections entirely and have isolated ‘tracks’ -afraid that isn’t possible in FCPX. Might want to take a basic tutorial in X so you can learn its differences and benefits over traditional track-based editors.

When you ingest media make sure it’s set to leave original media in place. Orherwise you can do exactly what you want to.

It can get a bit murkier working that way- because the two compound clips are independent. I.e. if you use one for echo and one for dialogue then make edits within one, the other will remain unchanged. So you have to be a bit more careful on how you plan to use them…

If you are having an issue with these commands try switching to the Default Set in the Command Editor. Sometimes customized sets have issues when you update.

Not really a bug- they’re just valueing data integrity above convenience a bit there. If you’re looking for clips on drives, I would suggest doing so via QuickView in the finder with FCPX closed to make it speedier.
