Any plugin that worked in 7 would need to be completely redone for X so it’s not really a Red Giant specific move.

Definitely do not want to cut an entire large project within a single event. I’ve seen large projects grouped into sections using events to organize, smart collections can also be a huge help to already ingested projects.
It sounds like you’re somewhat new to FCPX? Might want to start with some bonafide training as it’s program with a lot of powerful workflow aspects that don’t necessarily reveal themselves casually.

FCPX uses the GPU for exporting not the CPU so looking at CPU usage during export wouldn’t tell you a lot.

I’d take a good careful read into:

Some of those files are likely sym-links and some of them are the original media so you have to be very careful which ones you actually delete. If it were me and this were important enough I’d consider backing it all off to another hard drive before doing anything just to play it safe.
And you should definitely not stick at 10.0.9. There’s way too many useful features in the newer versions of FCPX to limit yourself to that version. Especially in terms of Library management.

To be honest I’ve never seen that working in X but not saying it’s not possible via some other utility. Can’t you simply deliver the file to the OB truck wirelessly or via a thumb drive instead?

Yes depending on the settings you choose in Compressor you could achieve a better looking encode. But it’s still going to be highly compressed 720×480 in any case.
