Generally speaking, plugins can break just due to something as minor as an OS’s update requiring a slightly different preference string. So yeah I would suggest very strongly installing betas on a separate partition to avoid precisely this sorta thingy.

It is what it is. I’d recommend you grab Davinci Resolve for more robust color grading. The controls in FCPX are meant to be simple to use but by no means comprehensive. Color Finale is also a great option.

You could simply connect the audio in the timeline- no compound. Of course this would only work if the audio and picture are single clips i.e. not groups of clips you’re trying to sync. Otherwise start over…

I’d let the computer track the creation and modify date personally. Expecting the editor to do it as part of the filename leaves too much opportunity for it to not happen consistently. You could also consider a third party tool such as:
