I use an eSATA port and add drives as needed. There is no redundancy, but I simply pull out the drive and use another when needed.

I use Shintaro BD-R’s. They also make BD-DL.

How do you apply the acrylic lacquer? Just a standard spray can?

I used Watershield DVD-R’s, but both my Canon printers leave matte marks (roller marks?) on the glossy disc surface after printing. When I first got my printer, it did not do that, so I thought it might have been an age thing so I bought a new printer, only to get the same result 🙁

If you edit constantly in multicam projects like I do, you should look at a dedicated tool such as Vasst Ultimate S Pro or Vasst Infiniticam, both developed by John Rofrano. They are excellent tools which I highly recommend and you can apply media FX and make adjustments and tweaks at track and event level. When you are ready, you create a Master track.

It is also really easy to change takes, and it is a simple as moving the take marker.

Ultimate S Pro also has a whole bunch of time saving tools such as lower thirds, a marker tool, photo montage, DVD tools etc.

You can trial the tool for free for a limited time.

Indexing serves no purpose other than searching on a Windows PC. Besides disabling indexing, I set my visual performance options to adjust for best performance, which disables a lot of Windows ‘eye candy’ such as shadows under menus, fade animations i.e. anything that can steal CPU cycles away from editing. I also set my swap file size manually to minimize page file fragmentation, disable my screen saver and use RAID to improve read/write performance. If your machine is not going to be continuously connected to the Internet, then disabling antivirus software will boost performance during edits and renders, but you have to be very careful that you don’t infect your computer when downloading Windows updates after forgetting to reenable the AV software.

To reset a range of time to use a single take (perhaps in order to redo the take choosing), select a range of events in the timeline and right-click one event. From the shortcut menu, choose Take, and then choose the take to use for all selected events

All I can say is that I have had numerous audio/video issues after rendering with SVP12. My video output skips. On my last project V12, the events had to be copied in SVP11, and then I used the Vasst Ultimate S tool to copy my multicam markers. I have stuck with SVP11.

The effect you are talking about is the ‘Ken Burns’ effect, which is achieved using key frames

Have a look at this. It’s called a shift tilt effect, but with clever masking and two tracks you could create a DOF effect you are seeking:

Apart from upgrading to SVP9 or later, adding a second hard drive on which to place your media files is a must. 1 currently use 5 drives:

C: Operating system
G: Source files (2 drives, mirrored)
H: Output drive (2 drives, striped)

Of course, you can just get 1 drive (the SSD), but beware that some SSD’s have reliability issues and do not crash (die) gracefully.

Generally speaking, commercially pressed BD’s will play without issue. It’s the one’s we burn ourselves that cause problems. My Sony BD player at one would not play BD-R’s, but had no issues with BD-RE. A firmware update fixed that. Of course, you can find a happy medium, burn BD discs and give it to your client who has a different BD player or has not flashed their firmware.

For ink-jet printable, Shintaro, because I have zero choice for ink-jet printable where I live. If I don’t need to print, Verbatim or TDK’s do fine. Note, I cannot get Verbatim printables 🙁
