So, I’m running an HP with an AMD 3.4GHz quad-core with 12gb of RAM. Standard hard-drive (7200RPM, I believe)

I’m doing some multi-camera edits in Vegas 8.0. 3 cameras. 1 HD, 2 SD (In the process of moving to all HD)

I was running 3 cameras all SD and editing just fine, but with adding the HD camera (.mts files from Canon G10), I’m having some lagging issues. I can make it work, but it’d be nice to be up to speed.

I’m thinking of adding a solid state hard drive. What should I look for and/or avoid? Also, should I just store my project files and raw video files here, or should I move my OS and applications to this drive?

You’re editing on Vegas 8. My edit speed went up a lot when I switched to 9 (along with a new computer). Render times went down massively. An HD video that took 4 hours to render would then take a few minutes.

I’d say you need to upgrade.

So, do you feel like the move to Vegas 9 really changed anything or just the new computer?

Well, Vegas 8 is pretty old now and not well suited to editing and rendering HD videos. No matter how powerful your computer is, it’s going to bottleneck in Vegas. You’ll experience a big difference if you upgrade. I believe you can get Vegas 12 for $150 now.

    Cool deal.

I appreciate the input. Do you happen to use a solid state drive?

I use a 128gb Crucial M4 SSD as my system drive. It’s not the fastest drive on the market (the 840 Pro is) but it’s rock solid and has been a big seller because of it. It’s also priced quite nicely on NewEgg, where I bought mine. If your motherboard supports SATA 6gb/sec you’ll see blazing speeds (my system- Win7 64-bit- boots up in 4 seconds).

Apart from upgrading to SVP9 or later, adding a second hard drive on which to place your media files is a must. 1 currently use 5 drives:

    C: Operating system
G: Source files (2 drives, mirrored)
H: Output drive (2 drives, striped)

Of course, you can just get 1 drive (the SSD), but beware that some SSD’s have reliability issues and do not crash (die) gracefully.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 12 (x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

I edit on platter hard drives that are external and connected via an esata cable to an enclosure. It’s worked well for me.

With your computer, though, if you upgrade Vegas, you’ll see a big improvement in performance.
