John, I don’t edit AVI, so you have a point, however I am still on Nero 9 as I saw no need to upgrade even though I was entitled to. Perhaps that those issues started to creep in with later versions of Nero.

I cannot comment on the quality of Taiyo Yuden BD-R. I use Shintaro, Sony or Verbatim.

I did have an issue with my older Sony BD player and had to do a firmware update before it would play ‘home brew’ discs. It played commercial discs fine, but when it came to ones I had authored, it appeared as though I had made lots of coasters until I tried it on another brand of BD player.

I test my discs now on at least 2 players.

I use DVDA to author and Nero to burn. DVDA for some reason consistently gives me disc coasters. Might have something to do with programs such as IMGburn and Nero being able to configure the parameters used to do the burn.

Unfortunately, WMV is a delivery format, and is not an ideal editing format.

Are you burning audio and AC3 or PCM? What is your player set to recognise in the audio settings? Do you have access to a consumer DVD player other your burner?

The Sony FW port issue is a well documented one, which my movie club discovered back in 2006 after blowing the FW boards in 2 Sony FX-1’s in short succession. Powering off does not really help

Having said that, if you still have your old computer set up available, connect the cameras to that to confirm that your ports are still fine. Invest in a DV line protector (mine is from Kramer), to prevent potential blown ports in future. My cameras NEVER connect to ANY computer without the DV line protector.

If you are using a non-Windows firewall software package that is configurable, I would also check my firewall software to see if it is blocking the FW driver.

If you have tried Graham’s suggestion, there is one other extreme option you can try, and that is to *uninstall* or remove the legacy driver he suggested and let Windows 7 default to the one that shipped originally with Windows 7. I vaguely recall that is what I had to do when I upgraded from Vista to Windows 7. If this works, you will need to stop Windows update from installing the later driver version.

Tim, I think everyone is onto the right track.

Have you tried reverting your configuration to as close to you can remember before the upgrade? You did not mention if you tried removing the eSATA or USB 3.0 card(s).

Have a quick look in device manager and event viewer to see if any of the added card drivers (eSATA or USB 3.0) did not install correctly. If nothing appears amiss but your performance is still poor, remove the new components to see if you can get your system running to what it used to be, then individually re-add the new components. You might have a chance of detecting the culprit this way.
