Other handy hints:

Take a small bean bag with you to place the camera on for shooting when you are in a moving vehicle or perhaps even when you are walking. The bag absorbs small bumps and shakes.

A mini tripod or gorilla pod might be handy to have around for those shots where you want to use a tripod but don’t want to carry around too much equipment. You even set it up so that you are in the shot occasionally :-).

I would experiment with these before the trip.

Kell, that’s pretty much what I do. I watch what others do, plus watch documentaries. You will notice that in addition to the usual set shots, they do a lot of cutaway shots, close ups, dutch angles, pans and wide shots to introduce variety. They don’t need to be super long, but you do need to hold the shot for at least 5 seconds to be useful in the edit. I was also video the signage, plaques, arch ways and things that identify the location. If sound is going to be important to you, make sure you have a decent mic with some sort of dead cat to block out wind noise.

If there is a travelling companion who is taking still shots, you can also integrate them into your edit.

Roger, thanks for that. I also came across a post in the Sony support forum that suggested undocking the Master bus and leaving it floating. That worked for me 🙂

The settings look fine. I don’t know what your friend means by ‘less quality’, unless he is referring to the image lacking ‘pop’, which you can do by adding video event FX.

I usually color correct (white balance) and add a hint of saturation, add to a touch of contrast (0.032) to crush the blacks and make them look less washed out and a bit of color curves.

Make sure that Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letter box) is NOT ticked under the Render As Render Options. If you do tick it, output can sometimes soften slightly.

Video rendering quality should only be set as good (not best) under the Project tab

Customize Template > Project > Video rendering quality = good.

You don’t actually say what your project settings are, so I can’t comment on whether there is an issue there.

Unless you know what you are doing and why, leave the preset as is. Given the size of your project, you render out using VBR settings.

That file needs to be brought into DVD Architect where you create menus and then create your image and burn the disc.

If you don’t need menus, you can burn straight off the timeline in Vegas under Tools > Burn Disc > DVD

Choose the correct Video Format eg 16:9 PAL, choose your burner and away you go.

In Vegas, I presume that you are using the MainConcept MPEG2 DVD Architect PAL widescreen template. If you then click customise template, there is a quality slider which is sometimes set to 17. I set it to 31. You might want to include Audio (under the audio tab)

I presume you are meant to be using the PAL template because you reside in a country broadcasts in PAL.

When in setting up the project in DVD Architect, you need to make sure you then choose the PAL option. You then need to import your render into DVDA and create DVD.
