I guess you have to ask your friend, “Less quality than what?”. A Hollywood movie? YouTube videos? You seem to be following a good workflow and if you are happy with the quality, perhaps your friend is expecting too much. But you have to understand what they are comparing it to before you can judge if it’s “less than” whatever that is.

Hey John thanks for your response, he was comparing with the original clips that were recorded from the camcorder. So he’s comparing the RAW video files from the camcorder with the edited video clips I have created. But there doesn’t seem to be any flaws within the project, as you have mentioned my workflow is good so surely everything must be going well.

What do you think of my workflow? Could there be room for improvements?

Make sure that Stretch video to fill output frame size (do not letter box) is NOT ticked under the Render As Render Options. If you do tick it, output can sometimes soften slightly.

Video rendering quality should only be set as good (not best) under the Project tab

Customize Template > Project > Video rendering quality = good.

You don’t actually say what your project settings are, so I can’t comment on whether there is an issue there.

My system specs: Intel i7 970, 12GB RAM, ASUS P6T, Vegas Pro 12 (x64), Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, Vegas Production Assistant 1.0, VASST Ultimate S Pro 4.1, Neat Video Pro 2.6

Hey Nigel thanks for your response, on Sony Vegas I’m using the following template:-

HD 1080-50i (1920×1080, 25.000 fps) > Everything has been set to default, nothing has been changed.
Full resolution rendering quality > Best
Motion blur type > Gaussian
Deinterlace method > Blend fields

When it comes to Rendering, the following template has been used:-

Blu-ray 1920×1080-50i, 25 Mbps video stream > There has been minor “Customize Template”.
Video Quality > High (31)

* Variable bit rate:-
Maximum: 30,000,000
Average:- 25,000,000
Minimum:- 20,000,000

*Variable bit rate, I’m unsure whether it was changed or left on default.

The original video clips where shot with the following settings:-
Resolution:- 1920×1080
Frame Rate:- 25 FPS
Data Rate: 21 – 22 Mbps

The settings look fine. I don’t know what your friend means by ‘less quality’, unless he is referring to the image lacking ‘pop’, which you can do by adding video event FX.

I usually color correct (white balance) and add a hint of saturation, add to a touch of contrast (0.032) to crush the blacks and make them look less washed out and a bit of color curves.

Yea, my rendered footage usually looks better than what my camera shot because I add Color Curves and a hint of Saturation. If you’re not color grading your output this may be what he’s referring to but if it looks the same to you then he may just be seeing things. Have him capture a frame from each and view them side-by-side and point out the difference to you.

One other thing you can do is put the source footage on track 1, put the exact same frames of the rendered footage on track 2, then change the Compositing Mode of track 1 to Difference. What you see in the preview is the difference between the two clips. The preview should be totally black if there are no differences. This should prove your point on way or the other.

I will test by adding color correct and hint of saturation and check if it makes any difference. Should I keep the default settings of the effects or would you guy’s recommend to trial and error? Any other effects to improve picture quality, I think adding a bit of brightness or something similar can help?

Well for Color Curves and Color Corrector the Default does absolute nothing so you need to adjust them to taste. Start with a nice S curve and adjust from there.

I would never use the Brightness FX. Color Curves is far more subtle and gives you more control.

Sorry but I’ve never done “Compositing Mode”. I’ve added source on track 1 and rendered version on track 2. How do I go about to do what you have mentioned?
