Thanks John. A comprehensive response, as always. My system only supports SATA II. The Mercury Accelsior looks interesting/tempting, but I have a sneaking suspicion my PCI Express slot is taken by my USB 3 card. My Video card takes up 2 slots and there is only 1 slot left. Will have to consult the manual to see what’s left.

Debbie, are you rendering using a constant bit rate (CBR)? I have experienced a flickering/skipping issue in Vegas. The sound remains in sync, but every now and then the image skips. If you are using CBR, you could try VBR instead, and if you project is too large, use Mark’s bit rate calculator to work out the optimal render settings.

Hmmm … I wonder if anyone on this forum has an SSD only setup. I have been considering it, and with prices starting to come down to around $500 for a 1 TB drive, would it give that last bit of performance boost for an aging 1st gen i7 setup such as mine?

One of three things:

1. Burning never finishes
2. Burning is very slow. Takes hours
3. Burn is successful but the disc only plays partially i.e. I get the menu but only part of the content plays.

I have tried BD-R and BD-RE discs from Sony, Shantaro and Verbatim, all with the same result. Since I started using Imgburn, I have not had one coaster.

I personally have had no success using DVDA to burn DVD’s or bluray discs, and I have fellow editors who have similar issues. Instead, I set up my DVDA projects as either bluray or DVD (according to what I need to do), and I use DVDA to only PREPARE the project when it comes to ‘Make DVD’. I do not burn from DVDA.

After I create the image, I then use either Nero 8 (for DVD’s) or IMGBURN (for Bluray) to burn the discs off that image. IMGBURN can burn DVD’s but I use Nero as it allows me to burn using multiple recorders simultaneously.

Unfortunately, Nero versions of late have included tons of bloatware which is why I have stuck with version 8. It does what I need.

The mixed lighting is not an effect. As this is a not-for-profit organisation that relies on grants, the lighting crew are progressively replacing their lighting kit. The video crew are also volunteers, so we do what we can given our paycheck is zero.

Fixing LED in post with a white balance set to theatre lights is impossible, so much so that we have resorted to auto white balance until all the lights are changed over.

My camera only supports two presets, but I have 3 lighting combinations to cater for 🙁

How effective are these charts when shooting with a mix of LED and theatre lighting, where it can vary from 100% LED to 100% theatre lights and everything in between? Mixed lighting setups such as this in a live environment have become a nightmare for me to shoot.

Any suggestions?

I’ve even had trouble mixing cameras from the same company e.g. Sony EX1, Sony Z1P and NX5. They all looked different and I had to adjust gamma levels (particularly with the EX1), but even that was not perfect.

Frederic Baumann does have a colour match plug in that I have had some success in using.

When I took my EX1 footage back to the camera man, even he had trouble matching it, but he was able to white, grey and black balance in his editor (Edius). I haven’t quite figured out how to do the same in Vegas.

If your image is washed out, try adding some contrast.

I have had NO success burning anything with DVDA. I use either Imgburn or my old copy of Nero 9. Works as advertised plus burns across multiple recorders. I avoided updating Nero to 10 and upwards because of all the bloatware that gets installed with it.
