February 24, 2010 at 5:40 pm in reply to: best source file for editing in fcp… dvd or dv avi?Assuming getting the source tapes isn’t allowed, can they use FireStores and record to Quicktime that way? That would be ideal for all parties I would imagine- the Firestore records as they’re shooting and you offload the files and as soon as they’re done copying, you’re editing. They might have to bring a harddrive or a few onsite, depending on how much is being recorded, but it will be a much lesser headache than ripping and transcoding DVDs, or transcoding mysterious .AVI files.

Can they send you test files from a previous event to see the quality? Sometimes the hardware these companies use requires proprietary codecs to read .AVI files as well. See if you can find out what they’re recording the event on.

What version of Photoshop are you working in and what’s the pixel dimension? Are you using the Film & Video presets when you set up your document?
And what are you sequence settings? And what’s the intended delivery?
As for the ABC icon, I’ve no idea why it’s now different.

In the Effects window, flip down Audio Transitions. Modify the level transition you want (0 or 3dB) to the length you want and make sure it’s set to default audio transition (right click). If you’re in FCP7, you can select all of your audio clips and use the keyboard shortcut apple/option/T. The transition will pop on all of your audio.

February 22, 2010 at 10:10 pm in reply to: Need help with Pixel aspect ratio problem/issueHey Dan,
If the border you’re creating in Photoshop and then using in FCP is on the very edge of the frame, then no, this will not show up in a video monitor. In the Canvas window in FCP, if you turn on Show Title Safe, the outer box is Action safe (about 90% of the screen) and the inner box is Title safe (about 80% of the screen) and all graphics should theoretically reside within that Title Safe Zone.
The easiest way to probably solve your problem is to use one of the Video presets Jerry mentioned in Photoshop for your sequence. Make the black edge on a layer, and on the layer beneath it choose an outer frame color (white, whatever) that would be in the Action safe area and beyond. Make sure to have a transparent center where you want your photos to peek through. Open up the Actions pallete and Load the Video Actions, and make an Alpha channel. Save this file off as a layered tiff, bring it into FCP, and place as a top layer over your photos. (For added fun, you could do a vignette on a third layer, where your photos will appear, and the alpha will translate that pretty well.)
The more PITA solution is to still do the black edge only in photoshop, alpha channel action, save off as TIFF, top layer, etc, then individually crop all your photos. Not a party. Been there, done that, and would prefer never to do it again 😀

Check that everything is kosher in your Sound Preferences Panel on the OS level, and then, Trash Preferences, Restart and try again.

What’s your audio output set to?

If you have some space on an external hard drive, you can make disc images of all the install discs, and the install time cuts down to like 40 minutes.
However, it does take a good chunk of time to make the disc images. Might not be worth the effort if you’re only doing this on one machine.

Sticks are just a term for a tripod.
There really isn’t a magic fix unfortunately. You essentially have to create something to cover that dot by either cloning part of (the door?) whatever that is in the background, and putting it over the light dot. You can do the cloning in Photoshop and kick out a one layer file that only has the fix and pop it over the entire interview. If you do that, make sure there’s enough feathering on the edges so it doesn’t literally look like a bandaid over the light spot, heh.

That is…. awesome. Is the shot on sticks? No movement? How often does her head blip into the light? And do you have (doubtful) a shot sans the light blip in there? You could layer the good shot on top of the bad shot in FCP if you do, otherwise, you can probably do some manoeuvering in Motion, or After Effects if you have it.
