plus you should upgrade to FCP 7.03

it might not fix the current problem but will fix others.

the latest version of Compressor is supposed to be less crash-prone than the earlier ones.

Resolve is also good at this (and is free)

November 8, 2013 at 4:54 pm in reply to: One project 2 sequences with different quality

could be the sequences aren’t rendered.

in which case you might have GREEN preview-quality RT on one sequence,
and ORANGE “Unlimited” quality RT on the other, which can look a fair bit worse, as FCP drops resolution to play it back.

the issue arises as FCP only has so much RAM to create the greet preview quality, after which it switches to orange

how does it look if you render a section?
or even park on a frame?

    re the wink.

you cant comp that out, well you can try, but it wont fix the problem as he’s still screwing his fce up.
use another part of the shot.

    re the wall stain shot:

the second, closer shots has smoke in the fg, so that puts it in the very hard category,
you have to either match the smoke,
or remove it & replace it.
but if it goes over the people, too, that’s really hard.

but it’s a short shot, and we’re not looking at that area (once it’s cleaned up, which i agree it needs to be!)
so you might get away with it.

if you haven’t done this sort of thing before, it;l take you some time, and may not look too good.

sorry, i haven’t looked at the video,
but a blink replacement would take about 5-10 minutes to do in FCP7

if the head is turning it’s harder and may not be possible.
a WINK is not blink, and may not be possible as the face scrunches up too much.

    my process is:

take the last good frame of the eye before,
make a freeze, put it on V2
track the eye to the head by turning freeze to difference mode, and key framing,
use an eyebrow, say to track.

do the same with the first good frame of the eye after the blink.
    put it on V3
do an dissolve between the two freezes, from the before-blink to the after-blink frames.
usually i do an opacity keyframe rather than a dissolve.

over this same duration dupe the V1 section on to V4
use an 8-point garbage matte around the eye area. (generally looks like a Zoro mask!)

    i’ve used it.
it does what it says it does.

also does a many other forms of text conversion.
    between FCP and other apps

and can be used if you need to change a bunch of FCP text overlays from one format to another,
for instance if you decide you prefer yellow subtitles to white.

there is a free version that is limited to 50 titles at a time.

the text generator “Text Up Pro” from the same people might be useful for you.
i think you get that free when you buy the full version of Title Exchange Pro.

November 3, 2013 at 2:55 am in reply to: HDV Clips out of order FC{ 7

“When I import the folder and look at the drop down menu they are tape 1-1 then 1-10 and it it all over the place like that.”

that ordering system is an old one, but FCP is an old app.
if you number your folders, or bins 1-01, 1-02, etc then 1-10 should fall in the correct place.

some free re-naming software will help you with this

” look at the drop down ”
do you mean look in the Browser??

another thing to do is to sort your browser items by columns other than name,
such as the Media Start column.

sorting by Reel AND Media Start is good if you have all your clips in one bin.
to do that sort by reel, hold SHIFT, and also click on the Media Start column header

November 2, 2013 at 3:37 am in reply to: Resetting Canvas in Final Cut Pro 6

“I am working on a sequence in Final Cut Pro 6 that we shot with two cameras (both in 1440X1080), as I was editing I must have done something because the image in the canvas got zoomed in.”

my first response would be you accidentally zoomed your canvas.
quite likely you wanted to zoom the timeline, and hit Comand +. but it was the canvas that was the active window.
happens to me all the time!

to fix that, select the canvas and hit Shift+Z (“Fit to Window” which also works in hte timeline)

” In order to fix it, I right-clicked and removed the attributes”

if my first guess is right, then you’ve “fixed” the wrong thing.
although why removing attributes would make your image SMALLER is a good question.

what sort of sequence are you working in? maybe it does not match your clips’ settings
could be your sequence is 1920×1080
