Is there a better way to use compressor to
convert to pro res? It keeps crashing and
can’t handle very many files at once.

    Set Target and Setting
    Apple – Format – Quicktime – Pro Res 422

Or is there an awesome conversion program
I can buy? I don’t care about the cost – just
    want the best one.

iMac 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB
    OS 10.6.8
    Final Cut Pro 7.0

the latest version of Compressor is supposed to be less crash-prone than the earlier ones.

Resolve is also good at this (and is free)

plus you should upgrade to FCP 7.03

it might not fix the current problem but will fix others.
