yes, that’s clear,
but no, the exported files won’t link back to the originals.

UNLESS you put them in the timeline according to their time codes, and give all clips from that angle the same reel#
but even them it’d be a long shot is my guess (i haven’t tried to do this.) it might depend on your finishing system.

i would be very wary of using reference files in an edit.
better would be to create new self-contoaned master files, then you wouldn’t need to go back to the originals.

FCP X can accommodate breaks and multiple clips within a single angle,
it might be worth trying that.

otherwise, my method for FCP7 would be to simply create multiple multiclips.
a new multiclip each time a there’s a new clip.
OR create new master files as mentioned above.

the main reason it’s bad to do this in FCP7 is that it does such a bad job of handling the difference in frame rates.

i know that for mixing 24 and 25 fps footage it simply adds or deletes a frame every second.

Premiere Pro or Avid are both suposed to do a better job.

48TB? ok, that’s a little hard to get into your carry-on luggage.

one solution (maybe the only one?) would be to use Media Manager to recompress the footage to an FCP approved format for the off-site edit.
this would allow you to take entire clips, without trimming them.
there are various format options avaialbe all the way down to Standard Def Off-Line RT

another less reliable solution would be to use the media you have created,
and use 3rd party tools to help you re-connect,
one is FCP re-connect,
another is Resole. you’d import an FCP XML into resolve, it is smarter than FCP at reconnecting,
then export an XML that you bring back into FCP,
BUT this is rather hazardous on a large project,
and would need some serious testing.

what you are attempting wont work.
Media Manager CAN change the names.
not always, but often.

you say you trimmed the media. you shouldn’t do that.
that pretty much guarantees name changes,

the best approach would be to take all the media,
or not to trim it.

getting the majority of your media to match your sequence settings is important in FCP7

so unless you have added a lot of fx, then the majority of your timeline should not need rendering.
if it does then you’re doing something wrong, and you have to stop and figure out what that is

if you HAVE a lot of fx, or even if you haven’t,
its always smart to FULLY RENDER your entire timeline.
this means going to the Sequence Menu > Render All, and ticking “Full”,
and hitting Option R when you want to render

once you’ve fully rendered, the export will be much faster,
and of course when you have to change one little part, you just re-render that bit,
and are ready for another fast-as-possible render.

the Alpha track had a dial to select tracks.
so in a pinch you could almost work 2 tracks at once,

but the best thing about that dial was i’d just spin it all the way up to select a track with nothing, or next to nothing on it.

i wouldn’t mind seeing a list of what does and doesn’t work.
for me the bigest problem is that the eye-dropper colour pickers in the various generators don’t work.
you can click open the colour pane, and use the eye dropper in that.

but that option isn’t available in the Colour Correction filters, so matching shots has do be done manually.
