FCP7 and operating systems

There will come a day when it won’t be supported. Right now it works fine in 10.10.4 with a Kona 4 card to 48TB shared storage.

On your main system if it works as is don’t upgrade, I had to to run AVID and FCP X so I upgraded but I still have a hard drive cloned with an earlier system in case there was a problem. Try an external drive with 10.10.4 and FCP7 for your laptop. Put it through its paces. See if it works for you.

Thanks for this Warren. Apologies for my ignorance but do I have to have a Kona Card? I was hoping to just put FCP7 on my 5 TB D2 Quadra Lacie Drive and my footage would also be on this drive. The files are not huge and it is simple talking heads interviews that I am editing (short 10 minute videos).

And yes, I agree with you about my main system. It still works fine so I’m not messing with it. Soon I am going to make the switch (probably to Adobe Premiere) but for now I am in avoidance mode.

No you don’t need the Kona card. I was just stating how my system is set up and all is working. Of course if you want accurate images to color correct, view etc., then a Kona card for a PCIe equipped machine or AJA’s 4K thunderbolt unit for a Macbook Pro is a must 😉

Wendy, you should look at this as a chance to start bridging to a new platform: simple talking head interviews are super-fast to edit in FCPX. This will get your feet wet in FCPX, while you continue to work with the older gear on the side. Just think about it.

I know Mark you are TOTALLY right about this … but I have dipped my toe into FCPX and do not like it at all. It doesn’t seem intuitive. I’m leaning towards Adobe Premiere for this reason but perhaps I should try FCPX again … I just have too much trouble letting go of FCP7!

Before you do ANY upgrading…clone your working OS drive. Make a direct copy. Carbon Copy Cloner does this.

FCP 7 stopped being supported at 10.7…but it works fine, fully, under 10.8. Some issues with 10.9 (Compressor and Motion no longer work…people report exporting issues)…and it just gets worse with every upgrade after that. It might work fine for Warren under 10.10…but many many issues of people going “this used to work, but now that I’m in 10.10, it doesn’t” pop up here and on many forums. Some things work for some people, some don’t.

So clone…and if things don’t work, you can go back. OR…you can install the OS on a second drive. Or clone, partition your drive into two, clone back to one of the partitions, update OS to 10.10 on the other.

i wouldn’t mind seeing a list of what does and doesn’t work.
for me the bigest problem is that the eye-dropper colour pickers in the various generators don’t work.
you can click open the colour pane, and use the eye dropper in that.

but that option isn’t available in the Colour Correction filters, so matching shots has do be done manually.
