are these the settings of your working sequence, or is your working sequence something else?

you say you have a new computer. is that your work computer?
any other changes to the way you work?

have you used THAT red before, with THAT font?

are you scaling the text up at all?

if it were me, i’d use compressor.
there you can add padding to the file to make it a nice 1280×720 that FCP will like,
while retaining it’s original aspect ratio.

for individual files open the file in CT,
click the “conform” button lower right of window,
chose a frame rate

for groups for files,
open CT,
under “File” menu ( i think) find Batch Conform.

the conform process is instantaneous.
it nearly re-writes a line of code to give the file a new frame rate.

as i say do a test on a COPY of one file first

I’ve had some clips with similarly weird frame rates.
they’ve been things sourced from youtube or similar, and run thought compressor,
and our fix was to simply run them through Cinema Tool and “conform” them back to their real frame rate.
worked fine for us,
but then, your situation is slightly different (capture from tape)

you should make a copy of one of your files and test it.

i generally found that capturing the 32k tapes at 48k worked out fine.
it might be to late or you to re-capture?

but hang on….

are you talking about just the audio?
generally the fix there is to up the number of RT Audio tracks in your FCP user preferences.
the default set to a laughably conservative 8.

if you are saying the video needs rendering, then there i something else at play.

you say you’ve set handles to zero,
but have you tried reducing your pre-roll time as well?

it’s so long since i’ve captured from tape i’ve forgotten where you do that.

I’ve used iShowU in the past,
Shane has recommendations, too, from memory

i wonder how it’ll work when you’re trying to play back 5-7 streams of video

setting up a manual split screen is really not that difficult
if it’s long, render overnight,
export a reference movie and drop it into compressor to make your upload-able preview.

you can try the various BLUR filters that FCP offers:
basic gaussian blur, or one of the de-focus effects.

the bloom filter in the “stylize” family of filters may be useful, i think,

i also think that you might need more than one layer of text,
so de-focus the top layer,
and a stronger defocus (ro bloom??) on the bottom layer, for your orange edges.

yes, that’s what i mean, go all the way (grade, mix) to final masers in 24fps,
then strike new 23.976 masters from that.
