mpeg streamclip is distorting the dimensions of my .mov when I convert
So I downloaded this public domain film as an .mp4 file:

Downloaded fine, dimensions not skewed at all.
I’ve probably converted over 200+ clips with MPEG streamclip and never had a problem, but when I convert this video it comes out skewed.

Can anyone tell me what’s going wrong and / or how to fix it? I’ve tried changing the available ratio settings, but they’re all distorting it.

Sorry for the confusion, everyone.
I just discovered that the converted files are still in the correct aspect ratio and Final Cut Pro 7 is distorting them when I import, but when I try to edit my original post it tells me that I don’t have permission to edit it.

This thread has been a horrible fail. I just discovered the distortion is coming when I import it to FCP 7. Sorry to make you muddle though this mess, but do you have any tips for importing without distortion?

FCP is designed to work with very specific codecs and dimensions…it might be having issues with the dimensions you have. Can you make a custom sequence with the dimensions you need? Say, make a new sequence, drop the clip into it…will it make the dimensions match?
or are you trying to add this to an existing sequence? If so…double click on the clip to open it in the VIEWER…then look at the MOTION tab in the DISTORT area…make that number 0.

if it were me, i’d use compressor.
there you can add padding to the file to make it a nice 1280×720 that FCP will like,
while retaining it’s original aspect ratio.nick

It was for a timeline of DSLR footage. Thanks to everyone’s input I figured out a workable solution:
If I set it to either 960×720 or 1280×720 during the conversion, it would convert properly but skew itself when imported to FCP.
BUT, for some reason I really cannot explain, if I converted it to 720×480 (DV-NTSC) it would work fine in FCP.
It looks great in my timeline, so I’m just going to shrug and finish my project.

960×720 is 4:3. it’s the anamorphic setting for DVCPRO HD.
720×480 is SD…low quality, just so you know. But, if you can live with that…
