‘Can I charge more for projects in HD? ‘

You will have to charge more if you invest money in HD kit

However with no experience of HD you cannot charge more for your HD skills, so perhaps you should charge less on your first HD project.

Maybe set a higher rate for HD then discount it to less than SD in the short term.

But whatever you charge i thnk you should charge a good professional rate .

‘ It costs me about 6 cents per Gig doing it this way but you end up with lots of discs’

What about YOUR time and the time you charge the client for your machine in making 300 disks the cost must be much more than 6 cents per Gig

  • Could you not do a swap, there may well be a AE artist working in a proper job in the USA who would not mind working in London for say 12 months.

Hate to say it as an FCP fan but this project might be better done on a new AVID media composer as you can mix formats in the same timeline and you have the excellent DNxHD codecs.

Got to hope FCP6 addresses mixed formats in the timeline because this type of problem can only get worse for editors.

Regarding the HDW-2000 deck Sony has this month just brought out the HDW-D1800 HDCAM deck with digibeta playback which is much cheaper than a 2000 deck and even cheaper still is the HDCAM only HDW-1800

Frank if you can wait the optimum time to buy a new system maybe a few months away, with new MAC Pros (with new Intel chips), a new operating system and ‘maybe’ FCP 6 all released as a bet within 6 months so thats one very big upgrade.

If you cannot wait then the latest MAC Pro’s will be fine for Apple software applications

  • Has anyone ever seen a bad set of ‘digital bars’ ?

Colour bars are from an age of analogue signal levels and were very important.

Digital test signals should be about error correction issues in the digital path bars are no good for that.

For a camera i would much rather see it pointing at a resolution chart than a perfect digital bar generator.

So yes it is at least a valid debate.
