There is going to be plenty of people who are going to buy into P2 and who understand the concept, those that dont buy into it will join later.
It is not a case of IF but WHEN you record solid state.

A tape drive for DVCPRO100 would be too expensive.

The way i look at it on my $10k budget i will spend say $6000 on the camera $3000 on memory and about $1000 on a P2 hard disk drive.

You have to try to make things work for you and since i have to edit i realy realy want rid of tape and if it saves me hours of digitizing i will pay the extra few $k of my edit budget to buy more memory since i dont need a deck.

Sure there are situations where tape is better but the Panasonic offers the most future proof ‘no moving parts’ camera solution, Panasonic have a very hot product here if they play their card right the could take a big market share away from Sony.

You can transfer your footage to hard disk then pop the memory back into the camera, think of it as a Big buffer.

Anyway as an Editor i have to say i welcome more disciplined shooting we get far too much footage these days.

You could say P2 is not a format !

No need to buy a deck either !!

    Am i missing something ?

At less than $10k you will get your money back so quick on a few paying jobs, i cannot see how you can go wrong.

When i bought my FCP Uncompressed HD set up it paid for itself in a few weeks doing SD work, if i had bought the Avid Nitris HD i would still be working for the bank !

There is no doubt in my mind that solid state recording is the future, the only debate is at what point you get on the train for the journey.
serge may join us at the last stop !

Serge you moan about the cost of P2 yet your shooting on a Varicam, need a deck in the edit and need to pay for digitizing costs.

If you need it now on a ‘paying job’ then buy it now, mine paid for itself on its first job in a few days, i could now use it as a spare or even afford to sell it for $1 (not that i am going to !)
Otherwise wait but if its a new product it might not be available at NAB so that is another wait.
I assume BLKM will give its current users software updates for some new features anyway.

    Thanks Jan
Next question is can you ‘mix and match’ ie assuming there was more than 1 slot could i have a 4Gig in slot 1 and an 8Gig in slot 2 ?
