OT – No more Apple Computer, Inc.
Posted by Walter Biscardi on January 10, 2007 at 12:10 pmSmall thing out of the Keynote speech yesterday, but interesting to note that Apple is now officially changing its name to Apple Inc., dropping “computer” from the name. They said it’s to better reflect the current media offerings.
Very interesting and nice to see mainstream media jumping all over the iPhone and giving Apple some great exposure. Myself, I’m just looking forward to the Apple TV, might have to order one today.

January 10, 2007 at 12:25 pmI’d love to order one but obviously the UK barely exists as far as Apple inc is concerned. We don’t get many of the toys until way after the US release.
The phone looks amazing, but in the UK the lack of any 3G ability is a bit of a limiting factor.

Yeah, kind of suprised they said it would “included in the future” and not right out of the gate.

January 10, 2007 at 1:15 pmlooking forward to the Apple TV
I’m a bit disapointed, expected it to be more video inclined.
For example, streaming our movies (QuickTime or MPEG2) to a TV.
Movies that people create, professionals or home movies. They are talking all the time about downloaded movies, from iTunes,
or I’m missing something here?Mick

January 10, 2007 at 1:24 pm[Miodrag Ristic] “For example, streaming our movies (QuickTime or MPEG2) to a TV.

Remember, this is a consumer show, so all information is consumer driven. I intend to install one Apple TV box in our shop to load up with demo movies and such to play on our plasma screen in the entrance to the shop. Could also take on to play demo materials and even full playback materials at job sites.
So as far as pro uses for the box, we just need to figure out how best to apply it to our needs. You won’t get that from a Keynote presentation.

I was hoping to do the same, but what is the quality, I assume that’d be the
same like making video for iPod, H.264.
How does that look like blown up on you 32″ or 40″ plasma?Mick

January 10, 2007 at 3:32 pmThe box can do 720p via component or HDMI, so the quality should be pretty good. I’m sure someone will post some optimum compression settings shortly after these are actually available.

January 10, 2007 at 3:40 pmFrom Apple’s product page…
Video formats supported: H.264 and protected H.264 (from iTunes Store): 640 by 480, 30 fps, LC version of Baseline Profile; 320 by 240, 30 fps, Baseline profile up to Level 1.3; 1280 by 720, 24 fps, Progressive Main Profile. MPEG-4: 640 by 480, 30 fps, Simple Profile
So there that is. Anyone know what the “Level 1.3” bit means?

January 10, 2007 at 6:08 pmMy major gripe with all of the new Apple products is storage capacity. 40GBs? that’s nothing. The way I would use the Apple TV is a media server so I don’t have to carry around all my music and movies in my laptop.
And $600 bucks for an 8 gig video iPod that is also a phone? 8 Gigs won’t be enough to store the attachments on my emails. Why not release the iPhone that’s really an ViPod that has a 160 or 200 Gig hard drive in it?
Walter is right, these are totally consumer oriented. Don’t get me wrong, the iPhone looks like major advancement in technology (can’t wait to see how that screen really works) and the Apple TV has promise as well, but it just doesn’t seem worth it to have the reduced storage capacity.
