December 5, 2013 at 6:00 pm in reply to: OT: WineBottler and CrossOver Mac: package Windows apps over to Mac bundlesI’ve used Wine for various purposes over the years with mixed success. The best advice I can give is to check their database of compatible applications. If there are just one or two apps that you need then try to bottle them and see how they work. I’ve found that the applications that work best are ones that don’t make heavy usage of Microsoft’s proprietary APIs. The exceptions to this are MS’ most popular applications like IE and Office, but that’s because a great deal of effort has gone into making them function properly.

September 19, 2013 at 4:25 am in reply to: Round-tripping from FCPX to exterior sound & color?I’ve gone to Smoke from FCPX for a few projects as well, and was very pleased with the transition. A lot of things that don’t always make the transition well (speed changes always get wrecked going into Resolve) seemed to work fine. One piece had a significant number of speed changes in it and they all came through perfectly as Time Warps. I know Ronny Courtens uses this as part of his regular workflow and every time I’ve seen him talk about it on here it’s been pretty positive.

Just for anyone reading this down the road, Compressor 4 does have a preset for DVD. I’m not at a computer right now but I believe it’s in the “Disc” folder and is just a single setting that you can adjust. If you want to use the old preset you can drag it out of Compressor 3 to a folder, then open Compressor 4 and drag it in.

August 30, 2013 at 3:27 pm in reply to: Why on EARTH is there not a 1920×1080 AppleTV Compressor Export option?!It sure does. Export a “QuickTime Movie” master file and drop that into Compressor 4. If you upgrade to FCPX it has an AppleTV setting directly in the program as well.

August 30, 2013 at 3:21 pm in reply to: Having Troubles with FCP X Multicam Clip Function…..Are you in the multicam editor or a project timeline. The multicam editor is for editing the sync and order of multicam clips, not for making actual edits. To do that you should place your multicam in a project.

August 29, 2013 at 11:22 pm in reply to: Lost 3rd party plug-ins after upgrade to FCPX 10.0.9Check your ~/Movies/Motion Templates/ folder and see if everything is where it should be. I haven’t experienced any problems with plug-ins on 10.0.9, maybe reinstalling the plugins would help.

My guess is a big one. Why else hold off on any real features for an entire year. The only thing that comes to mind since 10.0.6 was the added Log support in 10.0.8, other than that, nada. It looks like Maverick will include some power user features (new full screen dual screen) so hopefully FCPX will follow in it’s “serious” footsteps. Logic X is probably (hopefully) the best indication we’ve got on where Apple wants to go.

If you’re doing it in Motion right now, why not build a FCPX effect and publish it.

On a serious note, how great would it be if FCPX ditched effect stacking and switched to a nodal pipeline for effects and transformations.
