I myself would probably fake it.
Take the already keyed layer(with shadow keyed out), duplicate it, add a fill effect(black) to bottom of the 2 duplicated layers, lower the layer opacity & reposition/transform the layer to look like the shadow, add a blur if necessary. To go even further use a radial ramp instead of a fill, use a black/grey gradient, and use transparency modes(darken, multiply, etc.) to give the shadow some falloff… experiment with duplicating the shadow layer & combining different transparency modes & opacity values to fine tune the effect. -
Been switching to Adobe since Final Cut Ex was released, at home I’ve got a PC with CS6 creative cloud & at work we have a mac pro 2,1 with FCS3 and CS6. At work it’s a mixture between FC7 and PPCS6 but moving more towards the latter. If I have an animation AE heavy project it’s CS6, if I have a lot of H264 source footage it’s CS6, if I know I will be doing some work at home, CS6.
FC7 is getting less and less use as I go, but it is still rock solid for cut to cut editing for me, plus I have a lot of legacy projects done before I was with the company that are in FCP, & with FCP still running great it’s easier to update them in FCP than try and convert/conform them to CS6. Obviously premiere pro is still missing things from FC7, but to me it’s missing the least of my alternatives. Not to mention the MPE speed and AE dynamic link mean a lot to my workflow.

Are you monitoring your audio out of the AJA card too? I’ve heard adobe mercury transmit has a 1-2 frame delay from what is on the computer monitor compared to the video output, so to have proper synced audio you need to monitor audio from your output card & not the built in audio on the mac.

that sounds right, for a 27″ or 30″ monitor with a higher res you will need the dual link DVI

that would require dual link DVI, HDMI doesn’t support dual link DVI resolutions. You’d need to go from thunderbolt with an active miniDP->dual link DVI adapter.

I’m thinking because animation and PNG sequence include an alpha channel this is leading to your issue since most playback apps including quicktime can’t playback alpha channels properly & vimeo probably doesn’t convert them properly either. In your final PNG sequence the black background isn’t actually black, but transparency, so when a title dissolves away it is actually the alpha channel “fading up”, but since the app(or vimeo convertor) can’t playback the alpha channel properly, it will fill your text to 100% “opacity” at all transparency values except 0, which is why there is one black frame between titles. I bet if you put this PNG sequence back into premiere or after effects it would play properly with the fades.
As for format I’ve been fine with the h264 vimeo presets for the most part, if you’re getting artifacting between scenes perhaps try unchecking “key frame distance” in the advance settings on the video tab when exporting, this has helped with some glitches for me in the past.

Yeah I try to save camera lens blur for shorter segments & projects that don’t require a quick turn around. Fast blur really is the way to go when time is important.
Also set up after effects’ preferences to render multiple frames simultaneously, this will really speed things up on export if you haven’t already set it up. AE should see your i7 as an 8 core processor and you can render up to 8 frames at a time instead of 1 (though I set it around 6 so I have some processor speed for background tasks). -
If you have CS6 you can add the ultra key effect after your matte, it is limited in how much you can go but it will allow you to soften up your edges a bit in the “cleanup matte” section of the filter controls.

I’m looking at a new retina MBP to compliment my windows tower with creative cloud, though I will probably hold off until adobe updates CS6 to include the new GPU as officially supported for MPE and Raytracing in AE(seems really likely to me).
