I believe Adobe has basically ignored these types of features because of the insanely powerful dynamic-link to After Effects. However, one way I can think of: apply a fast blur to the garbage-matted footage, duplicate the footage and place it directly above in video track 2, remove all effects from the footage in track 1 and instead add a track-matte-key effect found in the keying folder. Set the matte to video track 2, and adjust the fast blur to your liking in the track 2 fast-blur effect.

    See, so super simple.

Chris and Ann, thanks for your help and quick reply. I’m a FCP refugee looking for a new place to land my feet.

I believe Adobe has basically ignored these types of features because of the insanely powerful dynamic-link to After Effects.

I love the dynamic-link feature and I’m very familiar with After Effects. However, I’m cutting a 30 minute long video shot behind a white back ground and need to cut out the edge of the shot that isn’t static. Being able to add a feather to the mask will solve my problem real quick. Sending it to AE could create over 100 AE project files. That’s not good. Programing Premiere to add a feather to a garbage matte really shouldn’t be the hard.

The alternative that you jokingly called “so super simple” may just have to work. What a pain in the…

Does the matte need to be animated? If not, you could also use the titler to make a soft track matte. I have done this before.

If you have CS6 you can add the ultra key effect after your matte, it is limited in how much you can go but it will allow you to soften up your edges a bit in the “cleanup matte” section of the filter controls.

Try to add the garbage mate to a black video, then apply a fast blur to this black video and use this clip as a mate. I think that will work.

Here’s a temporary workaround (though not perfect) to do a quick feathering on most crops, mattes, and alphas:

Apply your crop or garbage matte
    Apply the ‘roughen edges’ effect
Set the Border to desired width of the feather
Set the Edge sharpness to 0 to give it the feathery softness.
Set the Fractal influence to 0.

Save this preset as Feather Edges. (Edge Feather has already been taken’

I call this a temporary solution because I’m pretty sure Adobe will fix this ONLY IF there is enough requests on the wishlist, that’s how they work. SO PLEASE GO AND MAKE THIS REQUEST! 😀

I mean c’mon, if it works on ‘roughen edges’…

How many feature requests does Adobe need to get this done.
