That’s an amazing if brief insight into the differences between two very capable moviemaking tools.

I would agree with Gary’s assessment on image quality differences between these two cameras. I’ve not shot with either, but I’ve edited lots of stuff from both.

I like to think that with the sheer amount of time we editors spend looking at images in a comfortable and optimum viewing environment – calibrated monitors in correctly lit rooms vs. tiny viewfinders/LCDs in harsh sunlight – we can tell DOPs a thing or two about camera image quality.

Whatever the camera, consider the AJA KiPro which takes an HD-SDI feed form a camera and records as QT ProRes. So none of the compression issues and workflow problems associated with long GOP.
With a KiPro, the 6k camera becomes an 8k system.

Isn’t there some setting that controls how much resources are assigned to FCP?
Memory usage, Stills cache, Thumbnail Cache. Do any of these concern rendering? Could one tweak these to get some juice out the CPU?

If you mean tweak the controls on the fly while the video plays, like the proc amp controls on a VTR, then you can’t do that in FCP. You’ll have apply the filter, make adjustments, then play. Then adjust, then play. So basically all adjustments happen on a still. But once adjusted they apply to the entire video even to the picture before the one you’re parked on. Try doing that on a tape.

If this has happened right after the upgrade, then the upgrade broke some codecs. You may need to reinstall QT.

AVCHD when converted to ProRes becomes HUGE. Like six times the space of the original AVCHD. What I’d do is to shoot 1440 in AVCHD, then lot and transfer that into FCP so you have ProRes files. Then use Compressor to convert them to HDV. So that your HDV original shoot and your AVCHD shoot all is down to HDV and you save disk space.

If disk space is no constraint, then convert the HDV to Apple ProRes, and the AVCHD to ProRes as well and work with ProRes all the way. This second method will give you the best quality.

If you’re using the built in Scroll text in FCP, the speed is set by increasing or decreasing the duration of the scroll text clip.

You can do this with Compressor. I’ve used it to make excellent conversions from 1080p24 to SD-NTSC. Its slow, but one can get better times by doing a two step conversion. 1080p29.97 to SD-NTSC, then SD-NTSC to SD-PAL.

Do a small 1 min test segment in various ways with various settings. Go with the cleanest looking one. In any case your method of going via HDV is going to be crappy as there’s aMPEG2 conversion on HDV tapes which almost any standards converter will make a hash of during further conversion. If you must use tape, at least use HDCamSR.
