July 5, 2011 at 5:03 pm in reply to: Adding reel numbers to EOS footage

MPEG Streamclip won’t add reel names as there is no reel name in the original file. The EOS log and transfer plug-in will transcode to ProRes and impart timecode to each transcode clip that it derives from the thm files. But the original h.264 do not acquire this time code.

One easy way to ‘stripe’ Canon files with timecode and reel name is with an app called QTChange at Video Toolshed. I use it. Before transcoding.

In your case, if you now alter the files with QTChange, they will go offline in FCP. Your best bet is to modify the transcoded files from within FCP. You can add reel name to one file in the browser and then highlight many and select a reel name from the dropdown that you get with a right-click in the Reel column.

If you do Clip>Modify to a clip and while changing reel name, the fps drop-down is wrongly set, the clips may get corrupt. Whatever you do, first dupe the project and clips and work on the dupes.

QT Player only shows ‘standard’ if the clip has no TC in it. Standard is not timecode, its just a ‘from zero’ counter.

July 4, 2011 at 8:17 am in reply to: Subtitling into FCPX?

As a hint, the Automatic duck for FCP X video shows a sequence being dragged from FCP X on to the Auto Duck window. So maybe if you drag a sequence out of the FCP X window on to your desktop, you should get something, maybe a file that can somehow be read? Maybe?

July 4, 2011 at 8:02 am in reply to: FCP X Worldwide Pricing

I bought FCP X on the India app store and my card was charged Rs. 13,976.74 for FCP X, while Motion 5 and Compressor came in at Rs. 2,329.07 each. At the US price of $ 299 for FCP X and $49 for Motion and Compressor, I was charged at Rs 46.74 to the dollar. While the official rate is Rs 44.5 to the dollar.

So, out here the card company made the extra bucks in the exchange rate while Apple got $ 299 and $ 49 from me.

  • Priyanka,

I’m not sure I know the answer to your question as I’m not a Java programmer. The subject of this thread has been about Blackmagic Framelink and using that to convert DPX sequences to Quicktime. A lot has happened in this world since 2009 when this thread started.

Framelink does not exist as a product. Nor even does Color. Though you can find systems with Apple Color for some time now.

If you have a large requirement on converting DPX to QT, why not just send it out to a post facility near you that has Color installed. They can do the conversion in their spare time and hand you QT movies.

Yes, convert from HD to SD first, in Compressor. You can make these settings as good as you need and have the time for. I usually do some small 5 min segments at various settings to arrive at the best settings. Also, by timing what it takes for 5 mins, one gets a sense of what the whole program will take.

June 16, 2011 at 2:50 am in reply to: Boris AAF transfer sync issues

I’d love to send it. Please let me know to which address.

Also, I’ve been experimenting with using Boris to transfer FCP 24@25 timelines to an Avid 24p PAL film projects. I know that’s not supported but there’s considerable demand for that in our region. So I’m trying to figure out workarounds if any.

I can send you example sequences of 24@25 FCP, and Avid 24p PAL film as well.

Clip finder does it as well. But it will copy the entire clip.

June 11, 2011 at 11:38 am in reply to: ARRIRAW, offline editing and conform in Resolve

You can place the ArriRAW clips in a Resolve timeline, grade if needed and then render out in ‘source’ mode with ‘Use Prefix, Suffix…from source’ checked. And format as Quicktime with the desired codec and frame size.
You then have QT movies that will have names from the ArriRAW source along with the corresponding TC and reel info.

These QTs can be edited in FCP and an EDL made. The EDL will conform back to the ArriRAW clips in Resolve.

You could also consider getting the GlueTools ArriRAW plug-in which enables you to access ArriRAW files in FCP.

  • One method would be to make 50 dupes of your timeline. And in each dupe keep only the portion you need deleting the rest. Then batch export these 50 timelines. File > Batch Export.

May 10, 2011 at 12:01 pm in reply to: Filed/interlace issue with Quicktime export

[Philip James] “I’ve used Apple ProRes 422 for interlaced material (High Quality) and set Native Field Dominance to ‘Progressive’ in A/V attributes. “

After selecting the preset for interlaced material why are you setting native field dominance to None? Just leave it as is or auto and Compressor will pass on the native dominance to the compressed file.
