Subtitling into FCPX?
Posted by Jim Burns on July 3, 2011 at 2:41 amHave any of the early adopters figured out how to get subtitles into FCPX?
I’m looking at using inqscribe to transcribe lots of interviews and it produces XML that FCP 7 can understand and import.
Has anyone looked at, considered, and found an FCP X solution yet?
Thanks!
Jim

July 3, 2011 at 6:29 amI was doing the opposite route last week, using FCP7 to create subtitles for reference then exporting XML via STL in order to create DLP files for cinema subtitling. Using Title Exchange https://www.spherico.de/filmtools/TitleExchange/ which is very useful if you need to deal with various XML/STL formats.
Can’t think any way of doing it as “X” stands – XML support is coming according to the FAQ Apple posted last week.
best wishes

Thanks for your response.
I have been poking around the FCPX application and media folders looking for some of the text in my subtitles. I guess that they are stored in the new relational database and until the APIs are made available they’ll be locked down.
All the best

July 3, 2011 at 7:48 pmYes, from what I have read the code for XML implementation is contained in FCPX however currently disabled. I think if the next release can include XML, OMF and the ability to assign audio tracks along with proper drivers for AJA/Blackmagic to allow meaningful monitoring as a minimum then that may go some way to making it a more readily usable in environments other than largely file based ingest and publishing to social media sites.

July 4, 2011 at 8:17 amAs a hint, the Automatic duck for FCP X video shows a sequence being dragged from FCP X on to the Auto Duck window. So maybe if you drag a sequence out of the FCP X window on to your desktop, you should get something, maybe a file that can somehow be read? Maybe?

July 4, 2011 at 3:55 pmWith FCP X there is no API published which shows how to import or export stuff. There is some XML based stuff within the “.fcpproject” files, which can be read.
But it doesn’t make too much sense to try that without documentation. To create such a file without documentation even makes less sense.
So stay with FCP 7 for a while.Andreas
