This is exactly the config I’m considering.

The system I’m using is a CTO with 2 GT120 cards, one G-Tech eSATA card, and a Kona LHi already in there. So I plan on swapping the Kona for a BM Extreme HD3D, leaving the G-Tech, and swapping a GTX 470 for one of the GT120 cards.

What’s the ideal slot order for these?

If I need to do a Red job and have to fit in a Red Rocket, I need to give up the eSATA or the BM. Or, can I get away with not using a Red rocket? Will the 470 kind of fill in for that you think?

What’s the source of the GTX 470? Is it Mac or flashed?
Does it need extra power? How are you managing this power issue?
What other cards do you have in the MacPro?
Heat problems?

At this point, there is only speculation, primarily around whether there will be a new MacPro or not.

Some say, there is enough new CPUs and chipsets on the market for Apple to have one more upgrade of the MacPro. Others feel with the new i7 iMac and MacBook pro proving as fast and useful as previous gen MacPros, it makes no sense to make MacPros.

With Apple you never know what’s next. It may just be a larger MacMini with two i7 CPUs, an Nvidia GPU and Thunderbolt. Maybe with one or two PCIe slots. And a form factor that sits nicely below an Apple Cinema display. Those that need to use more PCIe cards get a TBolt PCI extender.

Wait and see.

For a GEC where the number of systems are large, my experience and observation is that while all are desired to be on a common shared storage system, some amount of planning helps. For instance not all 50 or whatever number actually need to share everything. So then, one can break them into functional groups where within a group everything is shared, but between or across groups only some things are shared.

This matters because as the number of concurrent users or ‘sharers’ increases, the BOM, complexity and cost of shared storage goes through the roof. Smaller groups of 10-15 sharing a dedicated shared storage and one ‘central storage’ shared by all groups but on an occasional basis makes for a more elegant storage model. Saves costs too.

I once deployed a large Omneon Media Grid for editing systems in a TV channel in India, only to find that they eventually divided it into volumes and various groups only shared a volume associated with their work.

The Omneon Media Grid which I termed OMG turned out to evoke such reactions, (in a not so positive manner) but that is another story.

I’ve used the one recommended by Arri, made by their generator…
Its called…
AlexaV3_K1S1_LogC2Video_Rec709_EE_davinci3d.cube

and that seems fine.

It needs to go in
/Library/Application Support/Blackmagic Design/DaVinci Resolve/LUT/Arri

where you find the existing one called…
Arri Alexa LogC to Rec709.dat

which is what you’re using.

A naive question, but please bear…

Will an upgrade from Resolve Lite 8.x to 8.1.1 retain existing projects and CC nodes? Or are projects not backwards compatible.
Also, if for some reason, one needs to go from Lite 8.1.1 to full (paid) 8.1.1, will existing projects be unaffected?

And, the other way around?

Also, what’s the peace of mind method to backup existing projects? Where and what does one back up. And then how does one restore it. This is just in case one uninstalls and reinstalls for any reason.
