Other than the bad history that many folks have with Iomega, I just don’t think the Rev drives make economic sense. First, there is the matter of $300 for the drive. The 70 gig cartridges are $70 or 4 for $250. That gives 280 gigs of storage for $250. I much prefer to buy large loss-leader hard drives at Fry’s and the like and use those for archive. A 750 gig Seagate is around $335-350 on-line. I would prefer a large hard drive and then either a Wiebetech drive dock or even a hot-swap sata enclosure. I think ultimately this delivers more back up for the buck. The real question is at what price point does the Rev or similar device become viable.

You will need 5.1 before you can upgrade to 5.1.2. So, you should do that crossgrade to 5.1 as soon as possible. Here is yet another reason in workflow for keeping your MXF files rather than just importing, rewrapping as Quicktime .mov, and then discarding the MXF’s. You would need to reimport the original MXF’s into FCP 5.1.1 or 5.1.2 and strip the duplicate frames.

I’m not certain what you are getting at. Shoot 24p in the HVX. Import into FCP 5.1. At the bottom of the dialog box which comes up after Import -Panasonic P2 is a little check box which asks whether you wish to remove duplicate frames. Check it. Your footage will now have the pulldown removed which is effectively 24p native. Then edit in 23.98 timeline in FCP. I think it was Noah in this thread who said it…. and I emphasize… you must use FCP 5.1. FCP 5.0.4 does support P2, however there were some serious issues with rendered footage which were fixed by FCP 5.1. Besides you must have FCP 5.1 to upgrade to 5.1.2, due within weeks, which will make some major improvements to the P2 process (and this includes Firestore… just using the term P2 generically). Later this year, we will see a firmware upgrade to the FS-100 which will strip the duplicate frames at capture, making the removal in FCP unnecessary. And it will also increase the recording time of the FS-100 by a factor of 2.5 in 24 native mode.

Just to get this straight… I have not yet upgraded from 1.2.2. Is it advisable to uninstall 1.2.2 and then install the (corrected) version of 2?

While everyone will express his/her own respective opinions, I find DVMatte Pro the oveerall best keyer within FCP. Close to that are the keying filters within Boris Continuum Complete.

Right, Gary… XML from FCP 5 will not work with Final Touch HD.
The workaround I have discovered for AD XML export is to rename it zzzAD… That way, it loads last. Seems that it kills any 3rd party apps that load subsequent to it. Then, by renaming, al of the 3rd party plugs load. And AD XML does work.

I have written a review on the lafcpug site about my very positive experiences and high data rates with the x8 and 8-drive raid based upon 2 4-drive MacGurus Burly Boxes and 8 Hitachi 250 SATA drives. This is blazingly fast and it has been able to handle 8-bit HD through the Kona 2. Scary thing is that this is Raid 0– no redundancy, and pure risk. One thing I strongly recommend is using SoftRaid to control the raid once you have formatted with Apple’s Disk Utility.

I have the Kona 2 in Slot 4 and the Sonnet X8 in Slot 3. Works great.

One final thing… if you are buying the Decklink, do not plan to use that in conjunction with the Kona eventually because the two do not play well together…
