I’m trying to determine the film back size of the EX1 sensor for matchmoving. Is 1/2″ a diagonal measurement? Are sensor chips 4×3, 16×9 or 1×1?

This is the first I’ve ever heard of Quicktime conform aperture!

Wow, that Tech Note confused me even more. So Quicktime Player Pro is cropping and scaling my movie?! That doesn’t sound good, does it?

I’m using QT Player Pro to convert my Uncompressed 8-bit to ProRes HQ. From your link, it sounds like I shouldn’t unless I individually modify the aperture settings? Should I be using Compressor?

Let me know if you find a solution for this. My EX1 has given me nothing but noise (and lots of headaches). Check out what I’m getting:

Not sure what happened, but after posting my original question, I repaired permissions again, zapped PRAM again and now the card works. Oh, technology!

Hey Michael.

I followed your settings and here’s what I got. I hate to say it, but it looks actually worse. I connected my EX1 via SDI to a Decklink SDI, so this is purely what my camera is giving me (and not added XDCAM EX compression)

Seriously, is this what other EX1 users get? Am I more sensitive to noise? What’s going on?

That amount of compression is what I get out of my EX1. I’m using nearest neighbor scaling at 400%, so there are no additional artifacts from interpolative scaling. Everything out of my two EX1s has been a compressed, noisy mess. So I’d appreciate any tips or further help anyone could provide.

Here are my PP settings:
CineGamma 1
Black -4
Detail -8
Crispening +20
Frequency +30
Cinema Matrix at +35

Thanks for the heads up. I’m assuming the file is user/library/preferences/Quicktime Preferences?

I rendered all those with ProRes’s auto gamma on.

I thought not. Can you point me to any documentation or web page that says for sure? My boss is going to require proof 😉

Sony’s documentations says that it has HDV in/out over Firewire. Anyone have any luck *recording* HDV to the EX1 from Final Cut?
