Do a search of this forum, Yep there are a few doing live capture via a laptop… I am using the MacBookpro for 1080i60 DVcproHD,, no problems..

HVX200>firewire 32’>MacBookPro 2.4/4 gig ram> sata express card (Addionics) > 2 x 2.5 sata 160gig mirrored Hard drives… Works just great Final Cut Pro 5.1.4.. Leopard 10.5.1..

I am not recording to the internal drive. The Express card is a different entry point than the firewire on the mother board. (the 400 and 800 share the same buss)

I am averaging a gig a minute with 1080-60i.. SO the mirrored 160gig 2.5″ sata drives give me about 2.5 hours of HD video with a mirrored back up. Add the 400 dollar 24″ LCD I just ordered and I should have a HD location shoot and edit rig under 9K..

You used a USB cable connected from your Mac to the HVX200 to write to the P2 card?

Was this edited video or the original MXF data (video, last clip) originally from the P2 card.

I have a client that likes the thought of recording her interviews via firewire to the MacBook Pro to 2.5 sata drives… But she also wants a mini DV copy (same Time code) to do an off line edit with at home… Can this be done using the HVX as a 1080i to dv transcoder?

hardened maybe but “grizzled” I shaved today… If the word got out that I reflect that term, I might never find a date that wants to hear about my new HVX200….

After spending 12 hours recording Lawyers lecturing about how to fire somebody in the workforce….. I really appreciate my freelance job… as I appreciate the Cow educating me (the lawyers have to pay for the education to keep their license) and Jan providing a great upgrade path for this “greying” SD guy to HD.

Winston, I think you have a cold fire…. no flame…

The only changes that I can tell is 2.4 went to 2.5 and you can still buy the upgrade 2.6.. They increased the ram 2 to 4gig and put 512mb ram on a new monitor card…

Not much change from my Dec 31, 11:30PM purchase… Unless that new monitor card is really that much more awesome… More ram is always nice..

I think they are just being a good boy scout and keeping the fire going with twigs…

I have been concerned about the same issues. But I read Barrys article on the CMOS chips rolling shutter and I will not get close to a Sony CMOS now. I saw a “Black History” special on local broadcast (big Local Station) I felt sorry for the anchors who put the show together and the Nationwide Insurance CEO who sponsored it. It was shot HD and you could tell it was CMOS rolling shutter camera. ANd how did I tell, in Barrys article he describes how the rolling shutter will show it’s hand every time you shoot that camera under old flourescent lights. The flicker in the old light ballast makes for bars to roll thru the image. And yep there it was thru most of the show… Every time they interviewed somebody in an old building. The sponsor CEO was standing there against a white wall with bars rolling down the screen. You have to be blind not to see it. It looks just like old 3/4 inch banding after tooo many edit passes. This was our major local broadcaster, doing their major yearly community service sponsored by their major advertiser…. I would be out of business, sued, bankrupted and probably laughed out of town if I tried to put that on local broadcast TV.

CMOS, rolling shutter, might be a pretty girl to look at…… but I gotta dance, give me the HPX500….

I have read all the great things about CMOS for the last five years and was waiting for them to show up in cameras…. Now I am very happy that I am waiting a while longer for the global shutter…

I know that I don’t want smear in my images, but I don’t want to start explaining wobble, skew, or partial exposure to a client.

Maybe out in the sunny west they are used to everything a little askew…..

but I am an Ohio type of guy 😉

Why not buy another HVX200..??

We got the HVX200 last December and will purchase the HPX500 after NAB. That makes our wonderful little HVX200 our “B” camera…

Yes so you teached me….

A 3.5″ HD running on Buss power, Yeha… but what kind of draw does it have on the power supply on a lap top? And I am in the gotta see it camp… As I mentioned the CP technologies 2.5 enclosures that I got last spring work great just off FW400 port.. But the same CP Tech.. enclosure that I got last month needs the FW400 and the USB port plugged in to get enough power.. CP Tech.. changed a couple chips on the bridge board….

I had to purchase a Powered USB Hub to power the drives.. It has a 1,000 milliwatt USB ports (if I recall correctly) A standard USB hub or powered USB hub is not hot enough to power the drives. Hence, I gotta see it…

Same with the 2.5 sata drives… just faster…

500gig// FW800// bus powered?? What science fiction mag have you been reading?

I have a bunch of FW400 and sata buss powered 2.5″ drives. The ones I purchased last spring run great just using the FW400 connector. The ones I got last month don’t, they need auxcillary power of the USB port. 160gig at 7200 for 110 bucks. Enclosure will cost you about 30 bucks. Do it your self, save and learn.

Goggle Addonics and get yourself a PCMIA sata card 60 bucks. sata is way faster. Buy sata/usb enclosures and sata drives.. save more money..
