These things are so sweet I can’t even tell you. The power comes from firewire, but doesn’t interfere with the bus so you can still run an ioHD or dv deck or whatever. It is pretty darn cool and they are small, flat and light.

They don’t come bigger. They use laptop internal drives, and 320 is as large as they get unless you look at a powered RAID… then you can get the capacity you’re after. I’d buy the one made by G-Technology, however they are in a transition phase customer service wise I hear…

500gig// FW800// bus powered?? What science fiction mag have you been reading?

I have a bunch of FW400 and sata buss powered 2.5″ drives. The ones I purchased last spring run great just using the FW400 connector. The ones I got last month don’t, they need auxcillary power of the USB port. 160gig at 7200 for 110 bucks. Enclosure will cost you about 30 bucks. Do it your self, save and learn.

Goggle Addonics and get yourself a PCMIA sata card 60 bucks. sata is way faster. Buy sata/usb enclosures and sata drives.. save more money..

Yes so you teached me….

A 3.5″ HD running on Buss power, Yeha… but what kind of draw does it have on the power supply on a lap top? And I am in the gotta see it camp… As I mentioned the CP technologies 2.5 enclosures that I got last spring work great just off FW400 port.. But the same CP Tech.. enclosure that I got last month needs the FW400 and the USB port plugged in to get enough power.. CP Tech.. changed a couple chips on the bridge board….

I had to purchase a Powered USB Hub to power the drives.. It has a 1,000 milliwatt USB ports (if I recall correctly) A standard USB hub or powered USB hub is not hot enough to power the drives. Hence, I gotta see it…

Same with the 2.5 sata drives… just faster…

Thanks for the responses. The G-RAID mini’s look great, but a bit too pricey for me and RAID-0 isn’t that safe. I think I’ll focus a little less on performance and more on portability/ease of use.

To be honest this is only a temporary solution and the most I’ll be editing is a bit of DV and mostly After Effects. It’s not an Intel, so I can’t use Premiere CS3 and don’t own FCP yet, so it’ll be a bit of Premiere 6.5 until I get my MacPro set up.

A FW800 5400 drive should be ok for DV shouldn’t it?

Um, you’re talking about a single drive so by default there’s no “protection” for a single drive.

Hence there is no difference between a single drive and the RAID 0 of the G-RAID mini.

There’s nothing wrong with RAID 0 so long as you back up your material, just as if you’re going to get this single drive, you need to back up that material if you want to protect it.

And the Sonnet F2 I linked to you can configure as Raid1. You will only have 300Gigs of usable space after that, though.

I am testing the Sonnet Fusion F2 now. Nice little drive. Good speeds. Not the best on a Powerbook G4, but good enough for DV. And yes, it can be raided as Raid 1 or Raid 0.
