That is why a poll would be interesting. Ask the Cow. Don’t guess. It was reading the threads on the Cow that has backed me off of buying that HD-DVD boat anchor. Thank You Cow.. Our market went heavy for D2, composite digital, remember that boat anchor.. But I did my national research and stayed away from that anchor also.
We have Tv spots on satellite, cable and broadcast all over this region. I pay attention to what the local outlets have. But do I follow them down every trendy over priced path. That is for fools with too much money or the whiz bang new station manager.
I am a big boy, 30 years making film and video for sell. I like my research. I like the details. I track the results. That is why I like the Cow. What is that old phrase.. Think Global, act local …

Yes HD ain’t cheap, Neither was Betacam SP in the ’80’s. Or 3/4″ inch in the ’70’s… And like my BVW35 or my 9600 -9650 Umatic SP 3/4, I am trying not to buy anymore boat anchors.
We have already produced our first HD spot, using our new HVX200 and chromakey stage and we posted everything using that soon to be boat anchor Cinewave. By the end of this year we will have also purchased the HPX500 and a new MacPro. If you do the math of proper configuared HD location and edit upgrades, I am scheduling over 50k in upgrades this year. No bank loans or credit cards allowed, all out of projected income. So for this mid market location spending 25K on a 1400 that already is selling used for 20k is not on my dance card unless it is totally neccessary..
Hence my attempt at polling the Cow for what is being accepted in various markets for HD TV Spot delivery.
We all know that broadcast video is all about expensive toys.. And those with their eyes open understand that one year from this month it will be all HD..
Anybody want to buy a really good low use 10 VHS dup center, How about a AB roll editor.. :-0 anchors away…….

That is the best part of living in a Hugh Metropolis like Atlanta. The nearest rental shop to me would be 2 hours away if they have it or 5 hours the other way.. one way… And a 3 day rental on a HDcam will surely blow the budget of any small market HD spot client….
And to go to the bigger production facilities in this market for a dub, is a notorious no-no… You might as well carry in your Client list and client phone numbers too.. They have already stolen and trashed too many of my past clients.

Jeff, are you delivering HD Spots in HD yet? If so how..
Walter, is writing what I have been hearing.. But the HDcam 1800 is 35K and the Panny1400 is 25K.. On Long format programing, yes these machines are needed. But how big is an HD 30 second spot?? Uncompressed 8 but Betacam SP averages around 1.5gigs perfect for FTP.
I am hoping Blue Ray HD has a Broadcast Version, that will be acceptable to all.. Maybe Sony will surprise us at NAB…
I am just polling the Cow for what is acceptable HD deliverables for 30 sec. Spots.
It would be great to hear more stories.

I am doing the shuffle over to P2 this year. What do you archive your P2 footage on??
Or is it all shoot edit dump..In the Columbus market no station, tower or cable, is accepting TV Spots as HD. They have to be downconverted to Betacam SP….
Anybody notice what the national/world intial preference for HD Spot deliverables is…
Will it be Blue Ray disk, FTP, or do I have to save my nickels for a Panny 1400 or Sony Hdcam 1800???

Shane, You need an Update… I have been running the great Cinewave card with OS 10.4.9 and FCP 5.1.4
I think FCP 4.5 was the last version before the omnipotent Avid decide to sacrifice the Cinewave to their great marketing Gods. (or they just renamed it)
So I was hoping somebody in the Cow pasture might have taken the plunge and tried to push their G4 or Cinewave card further.
Trying to keep the machine running with old OS, FCP etc would just make for conflicts with the new MacPro we hope to purchase after that lunar NAB thingy….

Anybody got FCP2 running on a Dual Gig G4??? With a Cinewave Card???

My goal for the year is to be all HD. I have over 25 years with most of that doing Betacam SP, script, shoot, edit.. I picked up the HVX200 and hope to have the 500 by mid year. We have sold and been paid for our first HD spot (chromakey-betacam delivery) We ran into a lot of flack from the client when we told him $1,500 but he jumped at $1,000 start to finish, our insert stage. So we didn’t go anywhere, It was a one take politician keyed over store bought motion graphics. About 3 hour shoot and 10 hours edit, dvd, web, betacam SP master. We didn’t get rich but it is ok 2nd shift work. The HVX200 made a great key too.
The client did have recent emigrants, who priced it at $500 but they had to ship the tape to another state to be edited.. So there is always somebody cheaper.
A stripped basic Sony CineAlta rents for $1,600/day in this market – just camera. So I am planning on offering the 500 with camera person, lights, audio, grip at that rate. Which smells pretty good. Our Betacam SP is 1.4k/day and we are targeting the HVX200 at 1.2k/day… Basically so many flavors they gotta like one of them. And you always have second shift to keep busy too.

I have it working great. 1080dvcpro HD over 32 feet of Granite Digital firewire to my MacBook pro to two mirrored 2.5″sata drives… Works like a charm..

That sounds wonderful.. Are you having any problems with the Component connectors on the HVX200. I have read where the cables tend to fall off. Where it is easy to “loose” a camera in the middle of a shoot.
