So Jeremy, are you saying that if I plug the HVX200 component out thru the AJa ioHD into my Mac Book Pro I can record 1080 in the “better” looking format “ProRes HD” vs DVCpro HD.
Does it make for better Chroma Keys?
And this process of recording does not work when you use the HVX200 firewire out to the MacBook Pro and record in ProRes HD… vs Dvcpro HD..
Am I translating this correctly…?

Goggle “iShowU” It is a screen saver – movie making software that is not to pricey.
I used it last christmas to do the same thing you are doing.. No problems,, And it will do it all in HD. Capture those Flash movies as HD and then drag them into a SD timeline and they will look great on a TV screen. I was totally amazed how quarter sized YouTube flash movies could look so good after editing and burning to a DVD.

Sorry to hear about your Avid experience…
Just go to Apple.com, sign up for the credit card and finance it.. A Mac Pro, and Final Cut Pro 2 is under $4k… Buy ram and Hard drives at your trusted discounter.. use your old Avid monitor, until the money starts to pile up…. Digitizing Betacam you will need the Kona card of choice.. But if you can export quicktimes with the Avid use it to digitize and lay to tape for awhile..

That is why I got it. Plugs right into the HVX200 or MBP – 1080i – 1920 x1200 is the monitor screen. I did notice that when plugged into the HVX200 it does not show the full camera view. It is a little cropped. The focus help for the HVX200 is not much better then the focus assist on the camera… But then that is supposed to be the reason to spend $2,500 plus.

I am sure most pros here on the FCP pasture would claim that, that is exactly what the Westinghouse is…

I wanted a monitor that I could use with my HVX200 and my 15′ Macbook Pro. Something inexpensive. I got the Westinghouse 24″ for $380 delivered from Best Buy. Nice doable monitor for the price. 2 day delivery.. It has HDMI, HD component, VGA, Video and SVHS connectors.
Before you call the undertaker, search the forum….. as Wally says,,,, cause we been talking monitors. for a couple weeks..

You have the perfect excuse… Take a vacation.. In this world of freelance editing you are either tooo busy- can’t take time off or tooo poor from not being busy so you have to sit near a phone and pray for work…
So your machine is in the hospital…. best excuse… go to the beach….
and don’t forget to send postcards…

Interesting, did you cross post this on the HVX200 forum?
I have read were you should never have the HVX200 powered on when connected via firewire to a computer and you are starting up the computer. You could blow the HVX200 Fire wire port- both ends want to supply power thru the firewire and the computer always wins. It could be a “fail safe” reason the computer is hanging up when you are powering up. Which would be pretty smart design on Apples part, thank you Apple.
Let us know your solutions. The MacPro is our next upgrade, right about June ’08.

David, Thanks alot for the extremetech link. Just what I wanted to read. They are just the right kind of facts, scientific based.. The speakers aren’t that bad for standard issue PC speakers and mine does shut off when my MacBook Pro goes to sleep.. so I wonder if they reviewed a factory defect. They had the street price at 600 to 750 bucks so my Best Buy $380 delivered made me feel pretty good. I needed a monitor that was good on location and attached to my 15″ MBP. I hooked it up to our HVX200 today and did notice that it did not display the whole image. The very outer edges where not there. (but is this typical of any monitor HD component out of HVX200, I do not know) The focus ability was on par with HVX200 focus assist, so good, just no bonus. The brightness does help with focus. But when using it to edit I will have to be careful not to over compensate for the lack of detail in the dark areas. The monitor buttons are not that bad. (I had to learn the piano once too) The control menu is average. Using the color bars from the HVX200 it doesn’t look bad at all just a little bright (there are three easy setting for brightness).
Being from the AB roll Betacam SP school of editing, I don’t trust any monitor, always telling the client, that true color is somewhere between the 14′ Sony PVM program monitor and the Panasonic 14″ preview monitor. Both very good $1,500+ crt edit monitors in their day.
So no, you did not ruin my new toy. For the 380 clams, if the grip backs the truck over it after 5 gigs, I just might settle on beer for compensation. If I can get 10 plus gigs out of it, then I will have the war chest needed to scout out a “pro” location monitor.
And isn’t that the edge we all try to find.

Just, what is the specs necessary for a good edit or location monitor. I have read all the posting and threads on the FCP and HVX200 forums. Everybody have there favorites, deep blacks, crisp whites, oops that has green in the mids.. Other than visual personal preference, what is the specs for a good one.
I have used a 23″ Apple for 4 years and love it. But the thought of bouncing around a 1,000 dollar monitor on a production cart makes me nervous. The Westinghouse L2410NM that was just delivered yesterday for $380 (tax and title) is way prettier than I thought possible. I plugged it into my MacBook Pro 2.4 via VGA and had pretty sweet 1080-60i chroma key playing in minutes. You can see the edges. His white shirt did not flare. His urban skin tones looked great, right down to the detail in his jacket.
To check it out further I played back “Flushed Away” my current favorite. The detail in that animation was in your face.. so I watched the whole thing again. The built in speakers are more than usable too.
So what are the hard core specs for a good production monitor… money, bragging rights on how expensive it is… connections … this Westinghouse has SVHS, composite, HD component, HDMI, VGA, audio in and out… I haven’t tried them all yet. Or is it size, this is 24 inches 1920 x1200 rez, contrast 700, 5ms response time, a viewing angle of 170×160, brightness is 450nits….
Yes, I understand that you want to trust the salesman who swears this monitor is the best for editing and it is a deal at $8k, (cash 7.5k) But I like just the facts, the bare ugly facts.
Cause I know that it is the unsung monitors and gear that nobody trusts or have heard of that are out performing their more expensive kin. And isn’t this the knowledge that gives us small shops the edge against world.
So what are the specs. Is their a standard test?
