The only player that the Hd-DVD is playing on is the MacPro and the Mac Book Pro.
Do the HD-DVDs play in the newer PCs? I have been told that the VLC player/video/app will play them back on both PC and Mac. I do not have an up to date PC to check it on. My older PC Laptop does not recognize the disk. I have the VLC software working on my edit Mac Pro.
The Sony S380 BluRay Player that I just purchased is doing a great job of playing back the HD H264 files. IT plays back the larger of the versions when you use Quicktime Share for web and it saves three versions in a folder. I do not know yet how large a H264 HD data stream it can handle yet, but I think I am going to find out.
I had 20 HD – DVDs / Blu Rays to do for the family. A dollar per blank DVD is way better than BluRays 5 bucks per blank. I do corporate video, the DVD was so much better than VHS. You had something to put in their hand. A download/streaming from the web is great and accomplishes the contract, but the clients still want something in their hand. VHS had the best weight/feel. DVD hits all the marks but, heft. Blu Ray has been it own worst enemy. My clients still do not have Blu Ray players in the office or the home.
What is being used to share hardcopies of HD video with the family, corporate market. The new Sony S380 is not a bad player and it played the H264 files. Is this the trend, to replace old dvd players with a BluRay player at 150 bucks that plays all HD files except HD-DVD?? Oh and these HD beautiful movies are on 1 dollar blanks…….

Take a look. SDI and the HPX500 has made green screen chroma key a bunch easier. No matched RGB cables, no trying to pull a key from a composite. HPX500 SDI into Aja Kona LHi that is in my Mac Pro using just Apple Final Cut Pro. All this is shot in our green screen 10’x22′ insert stage using 5 gelled 150 watt hanging yard lamps and six “tuff Spun” wrapped balanced fluorescent grow lights.
I have a walk-in, flip the switch Final Cut Pro Key stage. Any church should be able to build the Unistrut Light grid, hang some Ebay green screen and the grow lights. A good used HPX170 using the SDI would be perfect considering its’ wider lens.

Alex, Based on 6G MiniSAS tests though, an 8-drive RAID0 array will be faster (~ 900MB/s initially) than a 2-drive SSD RAID0 array (~840MB/s) in terms of transfer rates.
Are you saying that the 2 drive Thunderbolt SSD Raid 0 array is just 60mb/s slower?
I can deal 60mb/s any day for the right price and a smaller package (black box).
Laci could just hit a home run with their 2 SSD ThunderBolt hard drive if they have the right price.
And it has been a long time since Lacie really hit the ball.
So what are the “troublesum” characteristics of SSD drives that we should be aware of?
What are the projected “troublesum” characteristics of Thunderbolt?

Rafael, The new ThunderBolt Lacies are SSD. Two SSDs with 250gb per hard drive. Lacie does not say what the thru-put is. But SSD’s have a higher thru-put than a standard HD. So does a two drive SSD thunderbolt equal and 8 drive esata raid for performance on HD editing? Enquiring minds want to know.

I would not suggest to anybody to run out and sell their new edit rig for ThunderBolt enabled Mac’s. If you are currently in the market for a new laptop, yes order the new Macs with Thunderbolt. You can still make plenty of money with the old gear.
At this moment it seems like the Thunderbolt technology has the most to offer with Laptops. My esata express cards are the fastest for laptops now, but you can not daisy chain them ;-( and they work great.
With the Mac Pros there is a bunch of current tech that is available now, with the bugs worked out, that is fast enough to get the job done. Another Mac Pro is on my agenda for this summer and it would be great if it is thunderbolt equipped.
But if the SSD drives are the only drives that can take full advantage of the throughput speed, up goes budget. It would be interesting to know if a Thunderbolt 4 drive SSD raid will out perform an 8 drive esata raid and what are the budget variables.
I have done to much new technology black box – you bought it – you make it work – broadcast gear engineering. With the speed of thunderbolt, there has to be a real bunch of new tech show up fast (NAB) to take advantage of this speed. And that new tech is going to be very buggy.

I have had a similar problem years ago with a Sennheiser Lav. Half way thru the shoot the battery started to go bad. You did not notice the static noise at first because it was intermittent. It took a couple of weeks to track down the problem. Now I make sure we always use fresh batteries or phantom power.
Sounds like a job for Sound Soap.

Michael, I got the HVX200, three years ago and the HPX500 two years ago and I do more shooting in DV than HD every month. I try to remind clients that I shoot HD but these Government oriented clients just want DV grade. Everynow in then I slip and shoot DVCpro.
What you will notice with the HVX and HPX P2 cameras is that even DV grade looks better than tape. No tape noise, never. And DVCpro is amazing clean. (Yes HD is way prettier).
But the big kicker with P2 is that you get 2+ hours on a 32GB P2 card. I have 4-32GB and 2-16GB P2 cards and I have yet to run out. ( I have a portable download station, never needed to use it)
And you don’t have to worry about the tape being up to speed.

Don’t ask me why after 6 months of working fine the IDE boot drive in the spare optical bay decided not to boot. It was never partitioned, just 500gbs big.
But it did fail to boot. So I restarted in Leopard (on another HD) and the Snow Leopard drive was still there, I Carbon Copied it this time to a GUID partitioned firewire drive and dang the firewire drive booted in Snow Leopard just fine. So back to leopard I went and did the GUID partition on the original Snow leopard IDE hard drive and then Carbon Copied the firewire SL boot drive back to were it belongs and double dang, you guys are magicians cause now the machine is working just like it was last week.
And I didn’t have to open all those software packages and load each program and all their damn serial numbers… So triple thank you….. even tho there are rumors that you don’t need to Guid your IDE, it worked for me..
