How about reading the manual? I’m sorry to say so, but you really come off as trying to do your work the lazy man’s way without having even read the first few pages of the AE manual. I strongly suggest to do so before doing your first bold steps in the animation/ compositing/ motion graphics world as at least a basic understanding of keyframing and interpolation behavior is a minimum requirement in any compositing or 3D animation program.

Most likely you are screwing your Alpha by shifting the grey levels at some point. In technical terms you are enforcing some bright grey levels in the Alpha to be used as white without having compensated for it so you get holes. You usually don’t see that at first sight, but if you view the matte channel, it should show up. Try to adjust your Rollback parameters in Keylight. Don’t use the Matte Choker, it only intensifies that problem (it is not a very subtle tool compared to Keylights built-in tools).

Welcome to the club. AE 7 certainly sometimes does stupid things (I sometimes can preview minutes of audio, other days just a few seconds…), but there’s not much you can do. In your case most likely the install of AE has messed up your DirectSound component. AE tries to install a few DLLs, but they may not be the right version for your system or not installed properly at all. I suggest you try to update or re-install Mediaplayer, this usually sorts out such issues (but may have the disadvantage of loading another postmodern MS hog on your system that doesn’t allow you to go back to older versions of the Mediaplayer and decent people never use anyway *lol*).

January 4, 2007 at 5:22 pm in reply to: Next version of Adobe Production Studio coming to the Mac[TonyTony] “This is part of what I’m saying, but it’s only ok if you want to work all Apple or all Adobe. If you want AE to be able to read a FCP timeline you need The Duck. Why? Because of –> [Mylenium] “What could Adobe care what Apple does and what does Apple care what Adobe does? They are both monopolists and have a firm grip on their parts of the market”
I’m sure Premiere will be great for some people but why not open up all the individual products to working with other applications outside of the Adobe group (same goes for Apple too).”
Adobe surely had their reasons to go back, but by no means I’d see this as the eternal battle between two companies or a sign of desparatly trying to win users back. I agree that in an ideal world everything should work with everything, but we are not living in such a world and so for the time being we as users have to muddle thru. I think you are also forgetting that it took apple themselves a long time to get the integrated solutions and workflows (the notorious “roundtrip”) they are now able to provide. It is reasonable to assume that in time Adobe can do the same with their own products and even some “foreign” products like FCP.
[TonyTony] “On another note… you new it was coming. What happen to Adobe not taking about future products and releases. Now it seems they’re leaking like a cruiseship on an iceberg.”
Mmh, I don’t think so. Nobody knew anything, at best one could use a little logical deduction to assume that some day Adobe would go back to the Mac with its video products. You are also assuming too much – if I or other people knew about Adobe’s internal affairs, we certainly wouldn’t be allowed to talk about it before getting the greenlight from the powers. As for leaking – that could be seen either way. Again I don’t think it’s a sign of weakness. Perhaps it’s more of a trend Adobe picked up.
Personally I don’t mind an open information policy, be it just for planning my software updates, but if you look closely, you actually don’t know much just by picking up what little information is made available. Not even the public Betas for Soundbooth or Photoshop CS 3 do really provide any insights into what things may be coming and what Adobe plans to do with them. Those Betas are stripped of certain featueres or are in their very early state and quite frankly, I think it’s more a means of Adobe getting a feel for what users want and need rather than letting them in on their plans.

January 4, 2007 at 4:54 pm in reply to: problems with the collapse transformation & camera & null .. 🙁Assuming you are already using the Advanced 3D renderer, there isn’t really much to explain. Collapse transformations will maintain the 3D-ishness of your layers – no more, no less. This does not work for lights and cameras, which therefore have to be used in the main composition. Beyond that the only thing to consider is that all compositions share comparable dimensions – having a layer 10000 pixels deep in Z direction in a pre-comp doesn’t work to well if your main comp is only meant to extend 500 pixels in depth. Probably some such dimensioanl issue is what makes your layers disappear. The only other problem I can think of is an odd combination of effects, masks and Alpha channels, whose rendering order are also affected by the Collapse transformations switch. I really don’t know what more to say.

[Julian06] “that would be great.”
Yupp, definitely. Would come just in time for me now that we are finally switching to 64 bit at work. Steve, do you hear us?! ;O)

January 4, 2007 at 3:49 pm in reply to: Next version of Adobe Production Studio coming to the Mac[TonyTony] “There is the problem. As Adobe and Apple develop more and more tools their willingness and need to work together gets less and less.”
Na, you are seeing this far too grim. For all intents and purposes: What could Adobe care what Apple does and what does Apple care what Adobe does? They are both monopolists and have a firm grip on their parts of the market. In the end, all Adobe needs from Apple is XCode, a few tech docs on audio, video and other system drivers and some additional development tools. A large part of that comes with every OSX install disc, so in that light even the mighty Adobe is not different than a hobbyist developing a docklet or whatever… And before you start of on another track: While everybody usually moans about After Effects and Photoshop being bloated and slow, many users use the meven under less-than-ideal conditions on the intel Macs, so Adobe must have done something right with those apps, regardless.

Depends on what the character is supposed to do and how it’s built. In most situations you’d simply animate it like a normal character and use something like Clothilde to attach the strings to a crossbar or whatever.
