  • Nope, you don’t. AE only supports a few layer effects and even they are quirky, to say the least. However, fill should be among them. This is dependendant on how you save your PS file (I think you need to use the “maximum compatibility” in CS, I still uses PS 7 with no problems). On the other hand you could have simply used Tint or Fill to change your colors, couldn’t you?

    Billing your client for rendering times is just fair. Of course the rates are lower than for the interactive work part, but that’s ok. You know, even if you’re not in front of it, your computer consumes power, gets older wears out and uses software which also needs to be paid and updated once in a while. It’s actually quite easy to have projects where the rendering times are longer than the time it took to create them (those with massive numbers of 3D layers and motion blur for instance) and in the 3D world, where I originally come from, it’s almost always like that – you create a scene in 3 days but it renders for a week with all the fancies such as reflections and refractions.

  • Nope, not really. Actually you would need to work differently and generate your random values or whatever separately on another layer. Those can then be linked to text layers, sliders etc. for visual feedback. Having an alert() in expressions would be kinda counter-productive, don’t you think?

    [Scott] “If I had a simple rectangle or other four corner mask, I could animate mask shape by using the corner pinning mode in the motion tracker, but for other shapes, it does not work as well.”

    Nope, you’re mistaken. Mask shape and position are in a way the same – AE will store mask point positions relative to the layer, not the position of the overall mask bounding box. You’re also wrong about using tracking on mask points. Unless you use a third party solution (script, plugin) there is no way in hell to use masks in such a manner no matter how simple they may be. Unfortunately that area is something of a void since the only tools that could help here have been taken away from the AE community (Expression Effects and Useful Things). AFAIK there’s only one script in the latest edition of Useful Assistants that will take tracker data and convert it to mask point positions.

    Milky Way from Obvious FX can do such things using Milkdrop (WinAmp pluign) presets.

  • Mmh, AE should add the random value to both dimensions, but anyway, here’s the correct one:

    X=position[0]+random(-150,150);
    Y=position[1]+random(-150,150);

    [X,Y]

    Glad I could help.

    Have you tried the Auto color/ Auto Contrast/ Auto Brightness effects in AE 6.5? Assuming there is always one perfectly white and one perfectly black pixel in your image they work quite well.
