Most likely in the movie it is a 3D particle system, but you could create something similar using either Particle Playgrounds Layer Exploder or Trapcode Particular’s Layer grid mode. Another alternative may be using displacement maps in combination with mattes for varying opacity.

Use the Vibrate expression tag. For more control, connect the Noise node in XPresso to whatever property you wnat to affect. Just use some Range converters inbetween or your results will not look correct. Because Noise only generates values within a certain range you need to make those conform e.g. to angular measurements if you need them.

It seems unwise to export it as an SWF – either it will only increase file size unnecessarily because AE will “bake” all its stuff to pixel data even if it’s vector based or you will loose many features. in a way it’s a loose-loose situation. A much better way would be to provide your web guy with a standard video clip or a FLV file, with the first option being perhaps the better since he then could do the FLV encoding himself and tweak settings for optimum performance.

Follow the link in my signature. You can download a project that simulates old/ scratchy film. Lucky for you I did it way back then in AE 5.5, so you won’t have problems opening it in AE 6.

It is the proper way to tell AE which variable to use as the channel/ parameter value. It’s not required in many cases, just a way to keep things clean. With more complex expressions you will learn to appreciate such little things, trust me ;o).

No, you need to structure your project. You need to have multiple comps, each containing one part of your timeline. The trick is to find some good transition points for the speed changes. Once you have this arrangement, you can actually pretty easily adjust the timing by moving all your pre-comps into your main comp. I possibly wouldn’t even bother to animate the position of the layers but use the Motion Tile effect instead.

You may keep your wiggle, but in addition to that you may wanna stylice your layer with some effects. If you go to my website, you can find several “painterly styles” projects that might give you at least some point to start.

Your only chance for some sort of realism would be Forge Freeform, but it hasn’t been updated in ages and I don’t know if they are even still selling new licenses. Other than that, you could try Digital Anarchy’s 3D Layer, but it is rather difficult to tweak your displacement maps in such a way they keep the illusion of bending paper… Perhaps looking for a 3D solution right away before wasting time on exploring ways inside AE might be the clever thing to do.
