    Use some simple if/else construct.

    scale_ref=thisComp.layer(“Object A”).scale[0];

    if (scale_ref < 30) {opa=0} else {opa = 100} [opa]

    June 14, 2006 at 8:56 am in reply to: Converting AE5.5 -> AE7

    [BausDTown] “But then AE says, that there are Refererences to missing effects (‘CE Change Color HLS’, ‘FE Sphere’).
    I know, these effects are there, but with different names.

    Any way to get around rebuiling the effects?”

    No you can’t change the references, not even with a script (a script would still need the working effects to get its parameters and transfer them). You have to bite the bitter apple and do it manually by painstakingly transfering setting to the equivalent CC effects or Boris effects.

    Remove the effect’s AEX (temporarily) from your AE folder. It will report as missing, but your project should open.

    June 14, 2006 at 7:04 am in reply to: Importing .avi’s into AE (Mac)

    Mmh, that mostly depends on what CoDecs they use. Quicktime itself only supports very few AVI formats (Uncompressed, MS RLE, Cinepak). I know that you can install XVid and DivX as well, but you may not be able to use other CoDecs in AE without prior conversion.

    No. This type of stuff usually requires modeling the item in question in a 3D program and rendering as a wireframe mesh matchged up to the motion of the original and indeed the belief stuff seems to have been done this way.

    Anyway, if you don’t have a 3D program, not all hope is lost, but be warned: Don’t rely on any automatism – it will look cheap and ridiculous. More to the point: Be prepared to carefully create/ paint the contours in Illustrator or as mask shapes with Stroke/ 3DStroke and then arrange them in AE to build your “car” using 3D layers.

    [Zander] “also, is there a god way to create a wireframe of an object from a still, or is that like trying t make teh computer guess what underwear I have on?”

    In a way it is. Computers don’t hink perceptually and usually don’t know how certain areas go together including surrounding edges. To them it’s all math – if a pixel has value X it belongs to an area, if it doesn’t it doesn#t it must be either a differnet area or an irrelevant pixel. Our intern wrote his diploma about contour and motion detection, which quite opened my eyes for the intricacies involved… ;o)

    Choose an image format that can hold Alpha channels e.g. TIFF, PNG, TGA or PSD. I suggest you re-read the manual – say what you will about C4D, but its manuals are among the best in the industry. The entire rendering is explained in an entire chapter quite well. The specifics merely depend on what output format you later create in AE.

    June 13, 2006 at 7:37 pm in reply to: Sky refraction over a selected area

    Mmh, you should try the Corner Pin effect. This is much easier to control than aligning a 3D layer. You should also use two instances of your sky: one in Overlay mode to give an overall blueish tint, and one in Screen or Add mode with lowered opacity to accentuate the clouds or other highlights. I’d only use Multiply in a dark city environment with no sun reflecting in the windows.

    June 13, 2006 at 7:34 pm in reply to: multiple expression controls under one control?

    [Dan Ebberts] “If you don’t want to rename them, you can access them by thier order in the effect stack”

    Yeah, and after a while you don’t really know anymore what control is doing what (except of course for a genius like you, Dan) ;o). In case you are wondering what Dan means by renaming your effects: Select their name in the effects control window and hit “Enter” to assign them a unique name. This will help you to keep track of your stuff.
