we control a Beta SP deck (UVW 1400P) with RS232 from FCP through a keyspan adapter.
It used to be frame-reliable, but something in the new FCP5/Kona2 setup makes it not precise so I cannot recommend this solution for Mastering.– No Parking Production –

The VTR is rented from an AVID production studio – and they use it every day without problems.
This is why I suspect it to be a Kona2 or/and FCP related problem. After all it is the NLE that tells the VTR what and where to insert. The funny thing is that the problem is not consistent – sometimes the audio does get recoreded properly…– No Parking Production –

I think I know what went wrong. I usually set the deck’s TC to PRESET in order to stribe the tape with black from timecode zero. (Can’t get stribing in FCP to work properly – the TC has it’s own life).
And I think I forgot to set the TC back to REGEN for Mastering…!– No Parking Production –

I am about to test SanMP on a X-Raid (2 seats), but still have some undone projects. Did you have to reformat the Raid? Or will SanMP simply work with the Apple recommended Raid 50 format?

December 24, 2005 at 12:12 pm in reply to: FCP with AE 6.5: What is optimal workflow for me? HELP NEEDED!!if you start of digitizing in FCP – I would simply export by reference to the original capture files. This is done by exporting the sequence as Quicktime (without recompress or make self contained).
If you export to a different codec you will only be recompressing the footage.I would probably stick to color grading in FCP – but you can import the reference file into AE and alter the footage with a simple filter overlay. Even better use Syntetic Ducks exporter from FCP to import the sequence clip by clip in AE, giving you option for individual grading per clip…

Our plan is to use SNS or similar to access data on the SAN (XRaid) from the 2 Mac editing/compositing workstations, connected through a Fibrechannel switch. A render farm of PCs should be able to access the SAN through Gigabit Ethernet for writing 3D renderings (mostly during the night). We prefere to avoid a Metadata controller, and only run with the simple workstation setup…
