August 11, 2006 at 6:47 pm in reply to: LCD vs Plasma

We have 2 of the Panasonic Plasma from this series, one 42″ with the SDI input card, and a 37″ with just the standard inputs. I got the 42″ w/ the SDI input card because I do finsihing in my room, and wanted the extra bit of quality. I have to say, I’ve been pretty impressed with it. So, depending on what type of work you do, and what type of setup you have, I would go with the 42″ Panasonic.
Also, as far as LCD’s go, you will have to spend alot more money to get the same size and quality as the Panasonic 42″. And if you are doing finishing, and want to have an SDI input on the screen, you are looking the the Sony Broadcast LCD series, which is a ton more money.

July 17, 2006 at 4:40 pm in reply to: FCP vs. Smoke

Digitizing the same clip into a top of the line Smoke and into a top of the line FCP w/ Kona 3, I doubt you would be able to see any difference in the picture. But, like other have said, FCP doesn’t have the color correction or compositing capabilities as a Smoke. So, it really depends on what you mean by QUALITY.
Also, Smoke on Linux isnt as expensive as you think, 65K sounds about right, but I havnt checked prices lately.

We had a string of bad luck once where 2 seperate drives went down in the span of 2 weeks. It was the first time I realized how important protected storage was.
Ever since then, when asked if we should spend the extra money for that little bit of protection, the answer will always be yes.

July 5, 2006 at 5:25 pm in reply to: NTSC LCD Monitors Sony Luma Series ?

The Panasonic Plasma with the SDI input are pretty damned good, but again, still not as good as a Sony CRT. I just had my monitors professionally calibrated not to long ago, and my plasma is prettty close to my Sony, but not quite perfect. But the clients sure love the plasma, since I have a big head and they would have a pretty hard time seeing without it.

  • We got the optional SDI card on my 42″, the component connectors are currently occupied by the Xbox360…. 🙂
    I really love this plasma…

  • ROFL!
My Xbox360 stays in my room hooked up to my 42″ Panasonic… It’s for the clients… really…
Can you get the SDI input card on the 50″ Panasonic also?

What sound effect are you using for the transition? I would suggest a visual transition that compliments the audio efx you want to use. You could always use the “classic” ripple effect… It really depends on the style and pacing of your cut.

June 23, 2006 at 4:25 pm in reply to: Ultimatte Vs. Final Cut Pro- Green Screen Keying

We have a couple Meridien Avid Media Composers (circa 2000), and I can honestly say, that is not a mahine built for compositing. First off, Meridien’s 1:1 compression, is only 4:1:1. I’m not too familier with Ultimatte, but you working on a very old machine, and I would say almost anything new would do a better job. Especially now that you can pickup Shake for only $499, FCP would be a much better route. (Assuming you get something like a Kona3 card, and bringing footage in uncompressed and 4:4:4)
