[Wayne Carey] “I was just watching the furor take place over the “security and virus” issue with Macs. The thing is…. there’s not one.”
    Unfortunately, thats not entirely true.

A little bit of precaution is worth it. Having attachments and files scanned for viruses in another computer is easy to do and doesnt take more that a minute or two. My point was, the minor inconvience is worth it compared to having a $20k or $100k system go down to a virus. We run Macs, PCs and Linux machines here, so we like to make sure everyone has good protection.

Once you clip your white levels, you are pretty much SOL. I know that doesnt help you much, but its the truth.
Things you can try, aside from the obvious “turn down your brightness”. Add a little bit of contrast to your highlights channel. Also, take down the brightness a touch. Make subtle changes, anything drastic will make it look like crap real quick.

    hope this helps

Around here, we dont let editors use edit systems for browsing the net… Laptops are cheap these days, and are perfect for checking email, IMing, browsing the net…
Maybe we are a little parnoid, but once you have a system go down from a virus, it just doesnt seem worth it to take risks with our systems

June 16, 2006 at 4:20 pm in reply to: importing an After Effects movie into Avid

Hmmm if you are importing into avid at a DV resolution you should by working at 720×480. If you are working in uncompressed then your image should be 720×486.

Also, I would double check your import settings.

If you are importing using 601-non square using uncompressed, and the original file size is 720×480, then you WILL get a distorted image, since the Avid needs to resize the image to 720×486. If you are importing with DV compression, then your image should be fine.

One last thing you can try is to change from 601 non-square to Maintain and Resize, square. If your frame sizes dont match you will get a black bar top and bottom, but your image should look good.

This may be a stupid question, but I’ll ask anyways…

Why aren’t you creating a tiff sequence out of AE? I’ve always done my AE renders that way and they’ve worked great.

    I’ll go away now.

Once I saw a 30″ up close, the thought of dual 30″ left my mind immediately. That thing is huge.

    just curious

June 9, 2006 at 5:49 pm in reply to: credit scroll

One thing about credit scrolls, is you want it to be a nice even number. In the Smoke, I go by the rule of 4 pixels per frame. For example, if I was doing a scroll that moves 400 pixels on the y axis, I would want the duration to be 100 frames. This causes each frame of movement to be a whole number (meaning no weird decimals).
I’m exactly sure how FCP handles text scrolls, but I imagine there is a way to figure out the distance of your move, and from there you can calculate your duration.

I never new editing would involve so much math.
