EDL with Thumbnail
Posted by Eli Mavros on June 9, 2006 at 5:00 pmIs there a way to print out an EDL with a thumbnail. Our Flame editor was really impressed that an Avid editor gave him a printed EDL with a thumbnail. I said “Well, I can do that too”. Can I? Is this something FCP can do. I don’t really know how to even look it up in the manual (what would that be called?). Thanks guys.

June 9, 2006 at 5:29 pmNot exactly…. you can make a new bin, drag your sequence in and sort it, and have it display with a thumbnail… and then use Grab to get a screenshot which you can print….

June 9, 2006 at 5:41 pmAre you sure the Avid editor gave him an EDL with a thumbnail? An EDL is a text file and doesn’t allow images.
There is a way to set up a bin with all of the clips of the edit, and to have a thumbnail of each clip showing. If you set this bin up right it will look just like an EDL with thumbanils. Its an old AVID trick, and not really an EDL.I dont know if you can do this on FCP. Still waiting on my FCP system to show up.

June 9, 2006 at 5:42 pmI don’t know if it is an EDL…that is just what the Flame guy called it. Thanks for the help.

June 9, 2006 at 5:50 pmCan I ask what area you work in?
I work in the Santa Monica area, and there was this freelancer I worked with who used to do the exact same thing you are talking about…just curious

June 9, 2006 at 7:51 pmAre you sure it wasn’t an Avid Cut List that listed SMPTE code instead of film frames. Avid Cut lists can have the shot icons in a column is you want. I don’t think the Avid EDL manager gives you that option, at least not the last time I was on on Avid (several years ago). I cut on Avid’s for 10 years before jumping ship over the FCP.

June 9, 2006 at 8:04 pmI don’t really know what it was that the editor gave the flame guy; the flame guy says it was an EDL, but I doubt that is what it was as someone pointed out, an EDL is just a text file. I should ask the editor himself what it was that he exported. I’m in NYC myself and so is the editor; if the location question was directed towards me.

June 10, 2006 at 4:24 amProbably a printout of the bin in “script” mode. Can FCP do it? No. You could fake it with a lot of work, but it would be a LOT of work.
