Are you sure the Avid editor gave him an EDL with a thumbnail? An EDL is a text file and doesn’t allow images.
There is a way to set up a bin with all of the clips of the edit, and to have a thumbnail of each clip showing. If you set this bin up right it will look just like an EDL with thumbanils. Its an old AVID trick, and not really an EDL.I dont know if you can do this on FCP. Still waiting on my FCP system to show up.

Does anyone know for sure if cards, like the AJA Kona, will work in the new Intel Power Macs?

June 5, 2006 at 7:58 pm in reply to: Any thoughts on FCP vs. Symphony Nitris for HD online and color correction?I agree, you really should consider Smoke in this mix. Last year we were considering buying a Nitris DS, and decided on a Smoke for a variety of reasons. First, they aren’t as exspensive as they used to be. Linux has brought the cost way down. Like Angus said, it has an awesome color corrector. It also has alot of tool sets from the Flame, so it’s a really strong compositing system.

2K is the standard for film work, and should be fine for most film projects. 4K is generally used for IMAX type display use.
As far getting images into and out of the box… I generally ask for a tif or targa sequence, at whatever resolution I’m working on. You really don’t want to use compression on anything that is going to film.
It terms of getting your work to film, the settings you use all depend on who is transfering it to film. Each post house will have their own specs and you should contact them to find out what they want.moody glasgow

Doesn’t the MAC OS include a way to unistall programs? I know in windows there is an add/remove programs feature in the control panel.

Since this thread has already been Hijacked into a FCP vs. Avid, I’d like to ask those with knowledge about both systems a few questions. But first, a little about what my company does. We are a small post house (3 Avid Meridians and 1 Smoke), and are looking to upgrade are Avid’s and are considering the switch to FCP. (about 75% chance of switching at this point). The bulk of our work (90%) is :30 TV commercials. This means we work with clients breathing down are neck. Speed and stability (and a little bit of shine) are the most important factor.
That being said, If we make the switch, what are we going Love? miss? (I know the owner loves the price difference!)moody glasgow

I work in Santa Monica, which is notorious for bad power. We run EVERY editing system on UPS. In my opinion, its insane to invest $20k + on an editing system and not have basic power protection. At the very least you should have your computer, any hard drives or RAIDS, and computer monitors on a UPS. Brown out and black outs can cause corrupted data on your drives. For around $500 dollars you can buy a 1500VA Smart UPS from APC. This should have enough power to run your critical systems when the power fails, and give you enough time to save your work and shut down.
