I think this will work:
You can stay with QT6. Download the last installer for QT6 from Apple.

First, Move Quicktime 7 out of the App folder. Put it on the desktop.

Now, install the QT6 from Apple you just downloaded. Once installed, rename it something so that you know it is QT6.

Put new quicktime back in the App folder.

Launch the QT6 and enter your QT6 serial number. Now you have QT6 pro.

Hi Phil,

Making a copy in the finder will NOT work.

Using the Restore Tab in Disk Utility “will work”. Very simple to use. Click “Erase Destination” and DU will do a checksum verification when its complete.

I put quotes around the will work for this reason. I used the Restore Tab in DU to clone boot partitions at least 10 times. Always worked flawlessly. Running Diskwarior upon completion never gave any errors (CCC and SuperDuper do result in minor DW errors). Then on one partition I used DU and I aborted with an error message and the source partition was hosed. I had to run Disk Warrior to repair the original partition. I then used Super Duper to clone the partition without any problems. Made me slightly wary of the Restore Tab in DU.

Hi,

My suggestion is to get a Dual 533 G4. They are going for between $400 and $600 on Ebay. Its render performance is pretty close to a Dual 800. You can probably sell the 500MHz for almost as much as a DP533.

A friend with a 500MHz G4 is using 10.2 and (I think) 4.5. Except for rendering it seems decent.

I think Panther with 4.5 would be better (more stable and a little better performance).

Tiger and FCP 5 might be better yet (each rev of OSX so far has had a little better performance).

Do you think its time to figure out a better method of upgrading? Do you think it might be a good idea to stop burning your bridges behind you?

Before you make any substantial updates copy your boot partition to another partition. This will take less than an hour and the drive space is cheap. Then if your new install causes problems you can get back to where you were by rebooting on the copied partition.

In addition to doing a backup there are a lot of steps you can take to make the upgrade process safer. Running Disk Utility or DW to repair the drive, repairing permissions before and after the install, doing an archive and install is very safe, a fresh install with Migration assistant, or a fresh install and manually reinstalling all applications are some examples.

First (if you didn’t do it before the install) back it up.

What kind of install did you do? Is the Canon printer known to work with Tiger?

I would boot from another partition and using Disk Warrior or Disk Utility repair the drive.

Then use Disk Utility to Repair Permissions.

Then test.

If its still not working reinstall Tiger and either do a “Archive and Install” (much more reliable than a normal install). Check the box that is something like “save network settings and preferences”. This should work.

Another option would be to do a fresh install (still more reliable than Archive and Install), this might be called erase and install.

If you do the fresh install test and if everything is working correctly you could try (should work unless it tries to install the Canon) using migration assistant to import your old applications and files.

If you get it working (one or both of the above should work) don’t install the Canon again unless you test it on another partition or you can verify it works with Tiger. Even then do a back up first.
